Not sure if this tech tip was brought up before. No app needs installed. This is for mobile connections(LTE, 5G). Only works on Android 9 and above, and some phone manufacturers lock this section down(Private DNS).



Using my Samsung S21 on Android 11 for example: Click Settings, Connections, More Connection Settings, Private DNS. In Private DNS there are 3 options. Off, Automatic, and Private DNS Provider Hostname. Click Private DNS Provider Hostname and enter dns.adguard.com

May have to restart your phone, but itll now use Adguard as your DNS service. Their filters block ads and trackers BEFORE they get to your phone. Again, no special app required.

Welcome. A bunch of folks change their routers DNS settings to Adguard on their home wifi, but never knew they could do it on their Android phones for when away from home. Figured id post it up.

Will it work on an old old Motorola MotoG?

Depends how old. It only works on Android phones that have the "private dns" settings. Android 9 or above.

You can still block ads. Use a free adblock app called Blokada. Might have to have some young kid help you set it up(its not that hard) and version 4 from this download page will work on your phone.... Blockada 4 , scroll down some to see the link.

Adblock has their own Android browser that you can install. It has automatic updates and catches almost all ads. It works almost like Chrome.

Yup. Multiple browsers have similar capabilities. The difference is this method blocks ads, trackers, etc system wide. No matter the app. Ads, trackers and such never make it to your phone. And no app to install taking up memory or battery.

A coworker just asked if this method would block youtube ads. No, it will not. Youtube serves ads on the same line as the video, so this will not stop youtube ads. To stop youtube ads you can use an app called Newpipe . Only problem with newpipe is you cannot log in. To download newpipe at that site look at the version and scroll down til you see "assets". Click the apk file, itll download to your phone. Install.

Some browsers on android that use ublock or adblock addons may be able to block youtube ads if you use the browser to go to m.youtube.com instead of the youtube app.

I don't like it but I have to use Facebook to keep in touch with my family. It doesn't work there. They have their own brand of advertising hell.

You can block ads/trackers on the facebook app. You just have to go about it in a different way. This is for Android again though. You have to use adblocking apps such as Blokada, Adguard Premium, Netguard, etc....research ad lists to use with those and how to use the lists.

It would take me more time to figure that out than I spend on Facebook in the 1st place.
