Neighbor has one, older I would guess 10-15 years old. How long you got to let them things warm up before you drive them? He goes to work at 4 am and warms it up for 20-30 minutes. I am sure it is not stock. Sounds like an airplane when he finally hits the street.

I start my “Cummins”, let it idle for 30 seconds or less, and drive off, easy on the throttle until warmed up. Diesels warm up quicker this way. I know nothing about this “Cummings” of which you speak, though. smile

They warm up way too slow while idling. That's hard on them. Start and drive is better. They used to say you needed to warm up the oil to get it circulating but a 5-40 synthetic will circulate immediately. The days of straight 30 or 40 wt are long gone. Mine's an '08, by the way.

As soon as the oil pressure is up, put it in gear.

I suspect he’s not idling it to warm the engine, but to warm the cab.

My son has one,( Cummins , deleted, tuned,)and lets it warm up 10 to 15 minutes on cold days. They have some type of engine brake, that if you don't engage it regularly, will gum up and need to replace an expensive part. When he turns this on while warming up, it sounds just like a jet engine taking off. We live in the country, in a very easy going area, and have had neighbors not so much complain about it, but definitely ask if he would mind not turning that thing on while warming it up, it's obnoxiously offensive sounding.

Was never one for excessive noise, but I don't hate the sound of unmuffled diesel exhaust. Many hate the sound of the exhaust brake turbine spool. That's a single button push away from shutting off during warm up.

Nothing like the sound of a cummings.

Duramax. Turn key, drive, pull heavy things, go fast, turn off, sleep, repeat Cummins are solid. Ram, not so much. At least they’re not a Ford?

As soon as the oil pressure shows on the gauge I take off. I've been doing it the last 385K miles so I'm fairly confident I'm not going to hurt it that way.

I don't live in a subdivision so there's no problem leaving it idling if I want to. They are loud and for everybody that loves the sound of their diesel there are at least 20 neighbors who absolutely hate listening to those things idling while they're trying to sleep. They're like an ugly baby, only mama thinks they're cute. Someone that idles one for 20-30 minutes at 4 am in a neighborhood is a royal prick.

The exhaust brake will keep the turbo from gumming up. Many mechanics recommending using the brake full time. Replacing the turbo can cost $2k and up.

Cummins uses an exhaust brake. Some others use compression brakes (Jakes). Jakes are more effective but cost a lot more and are much more noisy. They're the loud braappp you hear on big trucks. The exhaust brake on my Dodge is very quiet and it's very adequate for what I pull.

I start mine up, put it in gear, up, up, and away we go. I have a 2004 and a 2018 Dodge. I like them both. I think the 2004 would out run the 2018 in a race.
