Did they ever make such a thing? I looked in the Rule book and didn't see mention of it as an option but I don't have the book committed to memory. Are there any documented specimens out there? I know they made post 64's with the full length stock.

Custom or special order? The one I saw I THINK was a special order as it has no provisions for front or rear sights. The stock looked like Winchester with the correct checkering but I never got to hold it in my hand either.

John Olin had 5 or 6 factory engraved M54 Sporting Rifles with full length Mannlicher stocks made up for friends. They were all chambered for the 30GOV’T ‘06.

No Mannlicher, aka "full stock" rifles whatsoever either cataloged or custom work as known. Carbines, unsure of the response in connotation of the question. All the carbine barrels bore the dovetailed aft sight boss. An interesting question whether that sight boss could be removed from the barrel with yet sufficient diameter remaining. I'd guess not, but ??? Yet, easier to start with normal 70 barrel.

Winchester did turn out a special order of 'pre genre' Model 70 Featherweight rifles omitting the barrel rear sight slot, known to collectors as "Gopher Specials"; from Gopher Shooter Supply the name as I recall. Conceivably one of those could have been source for such a carbine of old. Nowadays, those genuine "Gopher Specials" are "considerable bucks collector items" too!

A full stocked rifle as described, another too typical application of the wisdom... "Buy the rifle, not the story!"

My definite take!
Best!
John

Not in person, pictures. Just Google ‘John Olin Winchester Model 54 Mannlicher’. Leroy Merz sold one of the guns on Guns International and another was sold at Amoeskag Auction.

It seems to me that Jack O'Connor wrote about a full-stocked M70. He liked it and wanted one.

This is the rifle I was asking about. I would like to know the story of how someone let it get to this condition.

I have a "Post '64" M70 .30-06 carbine with a "full" stock. It was my first M70. Good handling rifle. I had read the stocks o these were actually by Fajem? Seems I also read they were only made I'm .30-06, .270, maybe .243 and one other caliber?

I like it - a lot!

Momentary disclaimer: Notably, this Thread initiated concerning PRE '64 exclusively, and my above Post in that context only. Post 64 Mannlicher Model 70 rifles Factory catalog infor included below.

Re O/P & subsequent Web link provided... Woah Bro!!! NO seller tassertion hat Pre '64 is any sort of "factory original"!!!
The condition would account for the "as is" sale. But too, such regarding any actual assertion of originality as in NOT. More than a leap of faith reading in some sort of rare factory variant. Excuse me "160user", but whatever those "160ies" are, maybe better stop "using"! At least perhaps when operating machinery or contemplating such as your post here. smile Would have saved time/effort had you just provided the listing OR narrative up front! More than enough wild claims associated particularly with Internet sales, the exemplar here, no such inference of "originality"!!! Appears an honest seller & wishing him/her well!

As to the "how arriving at such condition...?" Agreeing sad, but causation; personally, "so what"?

The other 'stuff' concerning John Olin & Model 54 factory Mannlicher... 'Perhaps true', but I'm with others here suggesting PROVENANCE! Jack O'Connor was a great gun writer with established reputation, but integral with his occupation; selling copy! Other eras, just to report, not question sources. Perhaps rule here... Buy the copy, not the story! smile

AMENDING my moments earlier words. Post '64 era Mannlichers listed in my source pdf Winchester Catalogs years: '70, '71 & '72; '73 not. ('68 & '69 catalogs pdf unavailable). Illustrations Mannlicher displayed without sights. Narrative specs including: $259. 19" barrel, European styling (w/Monte Carlo stock, not in my book) "detachable" barrel sights (presumably secured with screws), chamberings in 243, 270, 308 & '06.

My take and...
Best! John

I won’t quote PT Barnum on this one.
