what all is it good for. I relaod for 308, 7mm-08, 30-06 and 280 Rem and 6.5 CM. i am guessing the short action stuff wil be fine with it anyone laod the 30-06 and 280 with it I am not looking for posts of other powders. i know there are other ones thatw ork better. VARGET is what I found and that is the laod data I am looking for

Varget works nicely for 150 to 168 grain bullets in the 30-06.

It in my opinion is the best powder for 7-08 and .308 with mid to heavy bullets. I don’t think it’s well suited for the long action calibers listed. The good news is, if you have Varget you can trade it for anything you want and do it in a day usually. It’s possibly the most sought after powder right now.

Mid to lite bullets in the 30-06 might be a good match for the Varget.

Should work good with 150s in the '06, just like 4064. Might be okay w 165 grain stuff. I would damn sure try it.

Probably a good powder for 120s in the 280 and work with the 140s as well. Less than ideal but nothi g wrong w it.

Same w the Creedmoor, 120-130 grain bullets. Lightweights too.

Might be the bees knees in the 7-08 & 308. Light to middle weight stuff, possibly excellent with 165/168 in the 30.

6.5 CM 120 gr. ELDM. I've yet to tweak it for the 120 gr. GMX.

just got 4 pounds of IMR 4064 as well. ill go back ondaya nd grab a pound of H1000 for the 7 mag.

I've had great results in terms of accuracy and velocity using Varget in my 7x57 with 120gr bullets, my 8x57 using it for 150s to 200gr bullets, and It shoots lights out in my 223rem with 55gr to 60gr bullets

I not sure you can find a "laod" But I am sure if you do a search in Big Game Rifle reloading section and look for pet or favorite reloads you will find 308 Win, 30-06, 7x57 and other caliber references to provide you with some suggestions for good "load" data.

In my experience Varget is very close to IMR 4064's burning speed, so anywhere 4064 works Varget will as well YMMV.

Had an 8 pound jug of Vargay that sucked donkey balls. Took me 7-8 years to get rid of it. 5 different calibers and not 1 max load that would get within 200 FPS of book velocity. Couldn’t even get 3700 out of a 22.250 w/50 grain Sierras and 38 grains of powder and a mag primer. That stuff was pure junk. Lots of better powders out there than Vargay.

Ive had great luck with Varget. Shines in 308 win! Used it with good results in 9.3x62 and 7mm-08.

Done well with it in 223 for heavies.

Some of us chose accuracy over chasing max velocity.

I've heard of a slow batch of Varget from a number of years ago. I managed to dodge it, and the many lots of Varget I've used over a long time have been fine. Too many top shooters of the 308 Winchester have had winning results with it to condemn it entirely over a bum slow lot.

39.5 grains of Varget and a 40 grain BT shoots like a laser in my 22-250.

Varget and a 168 grain HPBT is as accurate as they come in a 308.

Varget and heavy bullets in a 223 ain't too shabby either.

Varget is also close to RL-15 in performance & burn rate.

It will work in all the cartridges the OP mentioned, including the 280 with lighter bullets, especially.

I have used Varget with great results in:
22-250 with 53gr TSX at 3800fps
200-210gr bullets out my 338-06 in the 2800-2850fps range.
and recently stellar results out of my 416 Remington with 350gr TSX's at 2575fps.

My thoughts too. I might be thinking 120-grain Ballistic Tips and maybe some Barnes products if I wanted to hunt .280 and only had Varget available to me.

Anyone have any comparisons for Varget and IMR 4320? Heard they are close and I have a couple pounds of it kicking around.

Supposition with no direct knowledge of, or basis in fact typical fire that people open mouth without careful thought.
If in fact there had been any accuracy at all, it really wouldn’t matter. There wasn’t. You can’t get any accuracy when you have ES consistently in the 150 + FPS and SD’s running 75-80 FPS. I consistently leave velocity on the table. But more obvious is the fact that you couldn’t comprehend that max load is 36 grains and I was 2 grains over, I was crunching kernels and still couldn’t get that sh*t to work. Good luck next time on your perceptions being based more on fact instead of fantasy.



Yes it was a bad lot, 220 Swift w/26 inch tube, Norma brass, 37 grains Vargay and CCI mag primer. I had a fireball 1 foot out the tube and velocity was off by 250 FPS. So yes it was Slowwwwwwww.
