I did not need to see that information. Lack of 8x57 on the shelf is my excuse for not thinking more about this...

Looks and advertised as the standard rimless 8x57, 8x57 JS. The ammo I refered to is rimmed, 8x57 JRS. Please check again to make certain.

The seller doesn't have the gun and is scamming, or he is totally ignorant about what he has. It is an 8X57 JR with the .318 bore.

At the advertised price I call S C A M!

8X57 JR ammo can be found, BTW.

8X57 JRS is often more difficult to find. Most combination guns before and during WWII were JR with almost all post war guns JRS.

Here's a good value in a post war 12/12/8X57JRS. They advertised it as JR, but I verified it IS a JRS. The scope is very expensive, big, and heavy. I almost pulled the trigger on it, as I sold my JRS drilling to a prominent Campfire member.

So, how does one achieve "prominent Campfire member" status ?

At the risk of being stupid what's the difference between 8X57R (which I know is the rimmed cartridge) and 8X57 JS or JRS? I know where there is a very nice double rifle in 8X57 R but in my search for ammo, components or dies it's a bit confusing.

There are two bore sizes for the 8x57, the first was .318 the second is .323. The bore size and bullet shape and weight were changed just before the Ist WW to .323, and rifles bores modifyed or made, to accept that ammo were marked JS, indicating Infantry, Spitzer, the larger bore dia. of .323. The "R" in the JRS designation indicates "Rimed" cases, .323 dia bore.
If the rifle is of interest to you, make sure you know what the bore dia actually is. I would think, maybe not?, the person selling would know.

Hope this helps.

Check the barrels on the underside near the breech. If it says 7.7 or 7.8X57 it's a J bore 318. If it says 7.9 it's an S bore 323.

Most J bores run around .320, some .321, and some tighter, but my experience has been most will slug to .320-.321. It gives a safety margin for those who used what ammo they could find, mostly the S bore. During and after the war not just a few hunters in Germany shot military rimless S bore ammo. It was all they had. They would use a cleaning rod to knock the rimless ammo out.

There is also a gizmo that can be added to rimmed extractors to extract rimless cases. It's a spring-loaded tapered pin that slips over the smaller "rimless" case rim that is milled into the big rimmed case extractor. I had two 7X57R drillings set up this way for rimmed and rimless ammo. I wish I had kept one of them.
