I don't post much, mostly lurk. But I'm bored.

Mine was a MK 42 5"/54 (127x835mm) on my Knox class Frigate.

70lb shell @ 2,650 fps, max range 25k yards, 28 rpm (but usually 5 round salvo's after 1 or 2 spotter's).

Always gave me a woody.

Any Marine or Army cannon cockers on here (155mm perhaps), or maybe a BB 16" gunner?

Don't fire unless fired upon. But if they want a war let it begin here.

I've never been in the military so no REALLY big stuff. A Barrett single shot, Barrett Semi-Auto, a Vulcan, and a Sate arms all in 50 BMG. They were all heavy things meant to be shot from a bi-pod or bags.

The largest "sporting" rifle I've shot is a .416Wby in a Classic Mark with and without a brake. I can't say I really enjoyed the rifle with or without the brake and I'm glad someone else owned both the rifle and the ammo.

Handgun: my S&W 500 4" with the 440gn cast bear loads.

Shotgun: my Iver Johnson single shot 12 gauge that I got at age twelve. First shot, pheasant load, knocked me on my butt.

Rifle: biggest kick, my .375 H&H Whitworth mauser. Nastiest kick, my Win M70 in 300 Weatherby.

On the flipside/joy to shoot:

Handgun: River Super Blackhawk, .44 mag, 240gn cast with 17.0gns of 2400; several 1911's with 200gn cast target load; and a Springfield XDM target model in 9mm. Also an old K22 with 6" bbl.

Shotgun: old Browning Citori in 12 gauge an an Ithaca M37 lightweight in 20guage.

It came with two boxes of loaded rounds. I checked. Three were missing out of one box. I eneded up loading it down to 458 Win Mag loads.

A Merkel 470 Nitro double. After that, my Win M-70 in 416 Rem felt like a 308.

I forgot all about potato guns. I made two of those. What fun, then they outlawed them!

I joined the Marines in 1979, my MOS was 0849 Shore Fire Control Party Man. Later re-designated 0861 Fire Support Man.

The first ship I ever called in fire missions with was the USS Oklahoma City before she was decommissioned in Dec 1979. We shot her out at San Clemente Island. She had the 6"/47, and 5"/38 guns. It's been a while now, and I don't recall for sure if we shot both, or just the 5"/38s.

I ended up doing a tour at the Amphib Base in Coronado, where one of my duties was being in the rotation to man the bunker at San Clemente Island, in support of the gunnery quals for all the ships in that part of the world. At the time, the Spruance Class destroyer was the main ship we seemed to work with, two 5"/54s. But also qual'd many 5"/38s, and even the 3"/50 twin mounts on the LSTs, and some other class of support ships.

I did have the good fortune of being there to help qual the 16"/50s of the USS Missouri when she was brought out of mothballs. That was really something.

Pre-fire brief aboard the Mighty Mo', Long Beach. I'm on the far left.

Lost a lot of other great pics along the way, two failed marriages early in a military career will do that.....grin

470NE. Had a 416 Rigby that I loved.

Nothing ever kicked worse than the 8mm Rem Mag I had. Hated that sumbitch. Sold it after about 6 months.

I was a Marine 0861 (equivalent to the Army's 13F) but did get up to the firing line with the 0811s a few times and was privileged with yanking the lanyard on M198s and one M777, both 155mm. Bonerific. Same with the 5" guns on the destroyers.

As far as hand fired stuff, .50 Cal (and I guess the 40mm grenade).
Shoulder fired? Some sort of elephant .4something. I can't even remember now as I wanted nothing to do with it after one round.

Sidearm: .500 S&W, 8.38" Bbl., 440 grain slug at 1,500 fps Not as bad as I'd imagined, but not something I'd do on a regular basis Fired a hot .460 S&W load (300 grain bullet @2,000 fps) in a 5" Bbl and thought that recoil was much, much worse. Pretty much unbearable.

Hunting Rifle: Weatherby MK V in .460 Wby Mag, no muzzle brake. Once, at a private range. I hit the target at 100 yards with iron sights, owner asked me if I wanted to fire it again. Nope.

I can fire medium bore rifles (.338-.375 cals) off a bench for an extended time without much fuss, though I do have a bruise on my shoulder the next day. But that .460 Wby is something else.
