Need a new stock for M70 SA, what in Mcmillan's lineup would be the lightest configuration?

I know this is not what you asked but I’m having brown precision stock my next custom built. Hard to get lighter.

Hunter’s edge if they will still inlet for it.

I just ordered a hunters edge for a short action m70 about a month ago. They still did I let for it then and wired about a 4 month wait.

My lastM70 hunter's edge with a 1 " pad, delivered late last year came in at 28 oz., that after I sent the original one back because it was over 30oz. My older ones were 23-25 oz .Don't know what they've changed but they have gotten heavier.
A Bansner should finish around 25oz.

I just sent a Hunters Edge to Weaver to get out on my Mashburn. Once I get it back I’ll weigh it. It was a flat top when I sent it to him, so that weight wouldn’t have helped anyone.

I believe my HE on the 30-06 was 24 ounces. I need to start a folder of pictures in order to keep them for threads like this.

I have two McMillan Edge stocks inletted for LH M70's. One was made about 5 years ago and the other about 7yrs ago. Both are painted and inletted for one piece bottom metal.

Compact Hunters Edge, inletted for factory sporter barrel, 1/2" Decelerator pad.....22.6oz

Supergrade Edge, inletted for Pac Nor #2 barrel, 1" Decelerator pad....26.9oz

I have a picure folder on my phone with all sorts of rifles/parts on a scale.

Agreed; wildcat or mpi would be the only other thing I know which would be close.

And probably quite a bit more reasonably priced as well.

Having had 1/2 a dozen+ McMillan Compact Edge stocks on M70’s I can confirm I essentially despise that stock. Chit ergos, horrendous recoil transfer... it plain sucks.

No kidding. I have a few of them on rifles up to 264 and find them pretty pleasant in the recoil and handling department. Different builds I guess make them feel to me. My 30-06 with 212’s at 2700 feels like a baby to me.

I have a few different style McMillan stocks and they are all edge filled. I personally like the FW style when using the model 70 action. I do have a hunters edge, but being 6’1” with a pretty long arm I feel the featherweight style fits me a little better. Unfortunately McMillan has discontinued this model and many others after being sold.

I've always felt like the Compact/Edge stock handled recoil very well. I have wished it had a higher comb at times, mainly when shooting prone, but the recoil transfer of it has always seemed very good to me. I have (or had) them on a lightweight and sporter weight .223AI, a lightweight .308, two lightweight 30-06's, a lightweight 35 Whelen, and a light for caliber .375 Ruger (mag fill).

Wildcat is out of the picture for awhile, some issue with insurance and shipping to the US, so unless you’re in Canada, it might be bit.

Bansner has a M70 and soon will have a stock for the Featherweight (was told a couple of months)

Brown Precision looks very good, but easily the most expensive too (but the Pound’r may be the very lightest offering)

Manners has a couple of stocks that they said would work too.

MPI can do a feather weight style and with all of the weight reduction options added it will be close to the Basner and a little heavier than a Brown. I think it will be lighter than the McMillan feather weight edge by a couple of ounces.
