Found 10 factory sealed boxes of old TC Maxiballs. So old that the Bore Butter lube had dried up and flaking off. The lead is covered with lead oxide.

Shootable if relubed or better to melt to recast into new conicals ?

They are utterly worthless. Box them up and send them to me and I will happily dispose of them for you!

Nothing wrong with the lead. Just get rid of the crappy bore butter. There's better options for lube that won't dry up or freeze up solid when it's cold.

Great bullet. I own both the .50 and .54 TC maxi-ball factory molds from the 70s.
Both molds dropped bullets that were very accurate in my TC Hawken and Renegade.

I'd clean the old lube off of them, then pan-lube with SPG.

I have not had great luck re-applying Bore Butter. Maybe there is a different formula just not sold here, but when I tried cleaning off the dried lube and re-lubing with what comes in the tube and the applicator attachment, it was messy as hell and wouldn't stay on the bullets when they got warm .. not at all like the original lube that came on them.

Pan lubing with SPG worked out really well for me.

I still.have a 54 cal mould for the Maxi-ball and a Minnie.
Renegade is long gone. But I would cast them by the coffee can full and keep them dry except for a dozen or so that I lubed and stored in a plastic bullet box..

I have a mold for my 50 caliber, the only thing I don't like about them is the factory made bullets can be a bear to get down the barrel, I guess they are made of a harder alloy than pure lead. My home cast ones of pure lead work fine. On game performance has been very good, dead deer in an orderly fashion.

Have a .50 mold, and found about 200 pops cast up.
I much prefer the Maxi Hunter for little ol Whietails.
No gots the mold for that one frown
