Just today I got another 09 action so I'm pondering what to build .I have pretty much all the metric calibers and am trying to come up with a chambering . Give me some ideas . Kicking around a .280 Remington .

If you're going 7mm, you might as well go classic with a 7x57

7.65x53 Argentine. You'll be the only one on your block with one.

If Montana had a standing army, a 270 Win with Federal Blue Box 130's would be the standard issue.

7.65 x 53 Mauser or 7.65 x 53 Belgian or 7.65 x 53 Argentine are all good, actually. Grin. I don't know where Missouri is, I've heard there is one...but you might have the only 7.65 in the county.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

I definitely know what I'd make it into... my favorite cartridge; 6.5 x 57...It would be all the better in a nice shaped Mauser Action on something like an Argentine 1909 Mauser.

How about 7x64 Brenneke or 318 Westley Richards?
I picked up a nice 1909 action here several years ago with the idea of using it for a 9.3x64 but a few things caused me to reexamine. (Hope to still do that but with a different set up.)
Leaning toward the 318 WR; it is "cool" personified, imo and no modifications needed.
I'm becoming more tolerant of intolerant people.

No one mentioned the "original" .280, the 7X64 Brenneke?

I like the .280 idea that’s never a bad choice. What do you have already? Any “holes” in yer cabinet? 9.3x62 make a mini express rifle..... barrel band, express sights, ebony tip, Rigby style This to me is what a Argentine 98 screams for. I’d love to do one this way.

While I am not hot for the factory stock have a look at a 146 Husky. That is a good template for a 9.3x62.

Why not 6.5-06 or 6.5 PRC? I have a savage 99 in 308 with 2x7 scope, short distance light weight. Remington 700 in 280 Rem with a 4x12 mid range and a custom 1909 Arg in 6.5-06 with a 4.5x16 VXL and 26 in heavy barrel for long range. All my bases are covered for the lower 48.Find a hole in your battery and fill it.

.22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer
Edit: I would run a 1-8 or 1-7 twist or you'll be shamed from the Campfire for not setting it up to shoot 1000 yards. Which brings up another question, with a 1 in 7 twist I wonder if a Sierra 52 matchking would make it out the barrel before it turned into fairy dust?

Well I've determined what I'm going to build on the 09 Argentine . A classic looking .264 Winchester Magnum.

Have you considered a .256 Newton? Get all the good things the .264 has and none of the bad.

Sigh.... You make me sad. I was starting to get on the 9.3x62 train. I think getting a full custom mauser completed is hard enough with standard cartridges. When you throw in opening up the bolt face, correcting any feeding issues and potentially re-heat treating the action it becomes a much bigger can of worms.
Regardless, good luck with it!
