I might need to buy a tap for some of my tinkering . My gunsmith said there are three "standards for screws " I can not recall the initials he used . What is the standard for screws on AR s ?

Which screw on an AR are you worried about??? They aren't exactly the epitome of the gun makers arts. If He was talking about thread pitch classes, don't sweat it.

The only place you will see screws on an AR is for rail pieces on obsolete hand guards, rings, and mounts. Rings and mounts come with the fasteners, but they are almost always Allens or torques, so I'm not too sure what screws you're talking about.

Receiver extension (buffer tube) and pistol grip screw are threaded.

More companies are starting to thread the bolt block pivot pin hole, and at least one (Aero) has threaded the rear receiver take down pin spring hole.

many gas blocks also have set screws.
