I hunt deer and pigs in often dark pine thickets of Florida and dark hardwood hollows of Tennessee. Less than 100 yd shots are the norm.

I have a Weaver Extreme 1.5x4.5x24 on a Savage 340C 30-30. The scope weighs 15.6 oz. I really like its illuminated dot. Both the rifle and scope have served me well, however this rifle is soon to be retired in favor of a Remington 788 30-30.

The Remington 788 30-30 currently wears a Leupold VX-2 2x7x33.The scope weighs 9.9 oz.

I recently purchased a Burris Four 1.5x6x42 with an illuminated dot. It is still in the factory sealed box. I intended to put this scope on the Rem 788 but I just realized the scope weighs 21.0 oz. Because it's more than double than what's on the rifle now, I am rethinking my choice,

Is the weight a concern since the 788 already is noticeably heaver than the 340C. My questions are these: Do I move the heaviest 21 oz Burris (42mm objective) to the 788? Or do I move the lighter 15.6 oz Weaver (24mm Objective) to the 788. Or, despite of my liking an illuminated dot do I keep the lightest Leupold (33mm objective) on the 788?

Has anyone had similar weight and objective choices? The more I think about the weight, maybe I'll never notice the weight and just go with the larger objective?

simple choice to me, since I've had a Leupold 2 x 7 shotgun scope on one of mine for a couple of decades...

and I have a Weaver 2 x 7 rimfire scope on my Winchester Legacy in 30/30... light and handy for the job at hand...

Good point. I have others similar.

I’ve had a 1-4 Leupold shotgun/muzzleloader scope on my Guide Gun for over 20 years. That’s the model with coarse duplex crosswires and set to be parallax free st 74 yards. It’s seen a lot of shooting with hotrod.45-70 loads, killed a lot of deer and been generally bulletproof.

If you're concerned about weight and like an illuminated dot how about a red dot or reflex sight? For your sub-100 yard shots I don't think magnification is a huge need. The TruGlo brand one I have has the option of a red or green dot and is considerably lighter han a scope. I found my eyes like the green dot better.

was just thinking about this...

if you are from the Upper Midwest, you'd be thinking a Tasco 5 x 20, with a 50 mm objective, mounted on see thru rings from Holiday Village, or from Mills Fleet and Farm....

The pig and deer population in the upper midwest need not be concerned.

I came up with that, after watching Escanaba in the Moonlight the other night...

I've spent time up there and it certain hit the nail on the head, with the 50 mm objective, and the see thru scope mounts.

I wasn't a Marine, but my dad was... I did serve two years on Medevac Crew on a Huey, was an Army 91 Bravo and 91 Charlie.
and am from Virginia Appalachia...
