Just a matter of time before elk show up at the farm in Southwest Wisconsin.
The DNR introduced a bunch of Elk in the Clam Lake WI area years ago which is about 260 miles north. Later they introduced some in the Black River Falls WI area which is about 110 miles north. A bull or bulls have been showing up about 40 miles north of my farm.
Smart elk, no wolves further south or looking for love in all the wrong places.
A guy in the same area of the elk caught on camera found a nice set of sheds.
You might find that having elk on your farm isn't a good thing. They're large and they can be destructive. They eat a lot of groceries and in winter, they'll run cattle off their hay. They can really trash a hay stack, too.

Got some a few miles from here . They are hell on fenches the guys say. .
Most of the time they don’t jump em, they go through em. 😂😂

In areas where elk winter, many of the fences are made to take down when they move in. The wires can be easily detached from the posts and dropped on the ground. It saves a lot of repair and also keeps the elk from getting tangled in the wire. The most common that I've seen is using wood posts. They drive in 2 staples/wire, 1 above the other an inch apart and only drive them in half way. The wire goes between the staples and they just drop a big headed nail through the staples to hold the wire in place.

R.C., thanks for that description. I've pondered the best way to drop fence wires. We've had as many as 500 elk pass through our place and it was a pain in the ass to repair the fences.
Problem is ... it is almost impossible to predict these events and need to balance the need to keep neighbor's cattle off the property. To the east it is easy to co-ordinate, on the west side it is a perpetual bull pasturage.
Also, some of the elk decide to stay, Many choose to continue moving to "greener pastures".

They are cool to see, I live in area that is wooded, surrounded by mountains, off of what use to be a golf course..
in winter they come down out of the mountains, up all night grazing. go off in a wooded area down by a creek to be down, between 7 or 8 o'clock in the morning..
with all the rain we get in Oregon, they come thru my yard going after all the acorns an oak tree can drop... I have 60 oak trees in my yard...
with the wet ground, and their weight, they can make a divit with each foot step, in the wet grass, the size of a coffee cup...
4 feet per elk, 40 to 50 elk in the herd, when grazing in my yard they can tear the hell out of it...
not to mention the piles of steaming elk poop they can drop.....
If I am up, by going out in the yard with a flash light, that is enough to chase them all off...
I have no fences... my neighbors who do tho, have real heavy post and wire fences about 10 feet high..
They are so cool to have around, but they sure can be destructive..
Luckily they have never gone thru the chain link fence to get after water in my wife's pool in the back yard....

Boy that’s the truth. When I get up in the morning I have to peek out the window to make sure that they are not ten feet from the house because if I turn the lights on I will be fixing three or four fences
Ive got them on my property (18 acres in eastern az) almost every evening through morning. Have to put fencing around all my smaller pine trees and they still kill them on occasion. However I still like seeing them. Had a wolf kill a yearling just 100 yards from the house last week. Its really dry here in AZ and I let them water in my water trough.
