I have a 336 that I am trying to identify the model. The serial number indicates it was manufactured in 1982. It has a straight grip stock and 18" barrel, chambered in 30-30. I had thought this was a 336T, but all of the information I can find indicates the 336T had a 20" barrel. Did Marlin also make an 18" barreled version? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

"MODEL 336TS (TEXAN SAFETY)
similar to 336 CS, except is .30-30 Win. cal., 18 1/2 in. barrel, straight grip stock and squared finger lever. Same as 336T but with cross bolt safety. Mfg. 1984-87. "

The above is the only one close, but note the date is after your 1982.

Are you sure on your date.

What are the first two digits in the serial number?

The first two digits in the serial number are 18.

It does not have a cross bolt safety.

The actual barrel length is 18 1/2", I rounded off in the above post.

You have a 18.5 inch barrel Texan. I overlooked it. They only made the 18.5 for 3 years. That's a rare one.

"MODEL 336T (TEXAN)
.30-30 Win., .35 Rem., or .44 Mag. (1965-1967 only) cal., similar to 336C, with straight stock. Some models have a 18 1/2 barrel (1980 - 1983) or 20 in. barrel, saddle ring (1965-1971 only). Mfg. 1954-83."

As I recall, 336T's were not common in gun shops around here in the 70s or 80s even with a 20" barrel and no saddle ring, new or used. I never saw even one of the 18 1/2" variants.

I bought a new 336T between 1980 - 1983, but never saw another one, new or used, afterward. Sold it off after a year.

I have-had an 18" barreled, pre safety, Texan. Put a 2x Leupold compact scope on extra low Weaver based and rings. It lived under the seat of my plow truck. Then my 10 year old grandson saw it. Intrigued by it, it was the first high power rifle he ever shot. He started calling it "his" Marlin. When I protested he informed me that he was my first grandson and that I knew down deep in my heart that it actually was his. He was right. This last year he took his first head of big game, an antelope, with his 30-30. Dang I miss that gun.

I had a couple Texans. I gave one to my oldest son a couple years ago and just traded the other last week for a NIB Steyr - Mannlicher Prohunter rifle in 308. - T.S.
