Heck of a reel. I have 2 Penns and almost never use them . A Penn 113 Senator and another one. I used them for Flathead catfishing in the big rivers.

16/0 penn on unlimited class fenwick. hope to gtet one on this summer Had one almost striped on bob hall pier back in 02, probably giant greater hammer. I was using a 35lb jack for bait. 18/0 hooks straightened out. Wish I still had the reel and rod, but those 16/0 bring good money from collectors. reels nowadays have much better drags.

For sure, BUT the old senators can really handle beach conditions, especially in blowing sand and if getting dunked. Unlike the more modern reels with closer tolerances. And its got more than enough drag for me and although "older" I'm a stout 5'9" with a pretty good back.
My fave is a 12/0 for day in day out but I also use the 14/0 for the big sharks in FL.

Those old senators have ok drags but they aren't in the same league as the new reels. Fished with both and senator can't hold a candle against a high end penn, avet, or any other high end reel. One of my old managers had a huge senator that had a handle like a come along. He wanted to hook salmon sharks with it. Pretty sure it was a 16/0. The handle was a crank, not a normal handle

There used to be quite a few "hop up" kits for the old Penn's. Drags, frames, gears, handles..... Obviously for a reason. Work horses for sure though!
That big one reminds me of Quint from Jaws!

I use my old Penn 14/0 for reeling in temporary electric fence when moving the cows. A old, heavy Penn 50w with 200lb power pro can handle more than I can.

wish my brother John and I would have kept those 16/0s, but even back then you could get 1000-1500 for one in good shape, especially if you still had the box it came in.

The mustache is the only positive ID in this photo. Without that, it could have been anyone in that blurry photo!

this is one of two of the hooks that pulled on the shark I'd hooked in the pic, never could slow it down, only had about 200 of the 1700 yards of line left on the reel when both hooks pulled.

Years ago I fished with a group that fished for sharks. Mainly in Galveston. I used a 6/0 and 16/0. We used Dacron backing on the big reels because the mono stretched so bad. I was told but never saw it happen that the mono would crush the spool. We fished off the Pleasure pier in Galveston and made a few trips to Bob Hall in the late 60’s. The Pleasure pier finally restricted shark fishing. Too many caught. Chamber of commerce though is was bad publicity. If remember correctly Bob Hall restricted reel size. Hasbeen
