Does the 541 use the same trigger as a Rem 788? When I've searched for a replacement trigger, that's what it looks like but I thought I'd bounce it off the peanut gallery before I actually buy something.

My understanding is the 541 is an upgraded version of the 581. I found the link below helpful when I replaced the trigger on my 581 S with the 788 Timney trigger.

The 541 trigger is adjustable - I have several and they are excellent triggers. Remington 580 series trigger is non-adjustable and many try and find the 541 series to replace it. Brian can adjust the 580 series as well.

p.s. the 788 trigger can be modified to fit but is not directly interchangeable.

When I installed the 788 Timney trigger in my 541 I did not want to remove any wood. The first thing required was to take the bolt stop down so it would work with the 581/541 bolt. Next I installed the trigger with the timney safety installed and it was easy to see what would be required to make it fit. The 788 safety lever stands away from the action and is angled to the rear. I took the safety lever off, clapped it in a padded vise along with the 541/581 safety lever. I heated the Timney safety lever with a torch and bent it forward with a pair of pliers until it was real close to what the 541/581 safety lever angle was. After letting it cool I reheated it and angled it back towards the inside until it was very close to the 541/581 safety lever. I installed it back on the trigger and put it all back in the stock. I had to reheat and bend just a bit more, but was able to install it without removing any wood. Then I emailed Timney and ordered a new bolt stop and safety lever incase I wanted to use it on a 788.

That. The one I have left I have adjusted to break at about 4 oz... It's the only Rem trigger ever made that was worth a chit..

Did you replace the spring. Mine will only adjust down to 3#.

Me neither - have four 541s and two are adjusted at 2lbs for a hunter silhouette rifle and hunting and two around a 1lb for match rifle silhouette and other types of competition.

PennDog: Both of my factory stock Remington 541-T's have excellent triggers - never thought of "replacing" them.
I recommend "working" on the original first - best of luck to you.

Varmintguy - ?? I also would not ever think of replacing a 541 trigger - only wish they were more available so the 580 series could be replaced easier👍

??? Mine's adjusted to about 1.5#... One of the best Rem triggers I've ever used.. Those 541's ROCK...

My 541's shoot VERY well even with the small game/hollow-point ammunition I shoot out of them, 97% of the time.
They look very good, they balance well and they seem stable (mine never seem to change P.O.I.).
If there was one thing I would change about the Remington 541-T's it would be the hokey, plas-dick magazines.
These fine Rifles deserve a pleasing gloss finished metal magazine - IMO.

Several people sell aftermarket magazines now that are supposed to be excellent. I believe one is 3D printed and the other is metal and everyone I know who uses them thinks they are great ... I may have to break into my piggy bank to pick a few of them up, but they aren't cheap....

Sheister: That link you so kindly provided was to a "single-shot" adapter that appears to me to be made or polycarbonate.
If you have a link to a metal repeater magazine for the Remington 541's please advise.

These are the printed composite mags. They are highly regarded by everyone on rimfirecentral.com and guys I know who have used them

jreed makes the metal magazines and he does them in relatively small batches every few months. He only does business through email from what I understand. His mags are very high quality and cost $70 each IIRC.

I have installed two Timney 788 triggers on 2 different 581’s. They both required minor wood removal for safety travel, minor bending of safety (torch, vice and factory safety as template), very minor removal of the top of bolt release to allow proper bolt release, and minor removal of the safety slot on the trigger ( to allow the bolt release to be further depressed). I inletted bottom metal on both so I had to remove some metal from bottom metal where the trigger group was making contact (probably would not do that again). Added second action screw and pillars with devcon bedding. Both shoot better than before mods. Timney Trigger is massive upgrade from stock non-adjustable. That said I have the 541 adjustable trigger in a volker customized 541x and it breaks at 8 ounces. If you can find that unicorn trigger, buy it at any cost!
