Had a New Haven Classic Matte in 300 WM in a wood stock. Thought I would try it in the tupperware it came with to see how bad it shot . I assumed it would be terrible and that would motivate me to get a McMillan or some such stock to improve accuracy. Lo and behold here is what I got using Federal Premium Barnes Triple Shock and Triple Shock X at 100 yards. I guess the moral is shoot these old cannons before you go spending a lot on improvements.

FWIW, my M70 is definitely matte but the serial number is a G36XXXX so I am thinking it was made in 2000-2002? The barrel is not stamped SM so I think it is a Black Shadow rifle not the earlier synthetic matte. Stock is like this one https://www.gunbroker.com/item/892939451 but it is control round feed with the bolt numbered to the receiver.

Interesting. The Black Shadow came out in 98. I only have catalogs through 99 but in both of those years the Black Shadow was a push feed. In 98 and 99, it did have the same stock you pointed out in the GB add (a push feed) which appears to be the same as the Synthetic Matte; no W imprint. In 98, Winchester describes it as "Durable, moisture-resistant composite stock." Guess i need to keep adding to my catalogs.
I am stumped too. I found the 2001-2019 catalogs on line. I did not find this version anywhere. I got it in a trade so maybe someone else swapped it into this stock. I also could not find a CRF version of the matte rifle in those catalogs but that is what it is. Matters not though, as you say it seems to work great.
Not sure I know the difference. Seems like all plastic to me. Perhaps someone else knows.
They are all plastic. Regardless of what fancy name's they have for the materials. Its soft, you'll know what I'm talking about if you ever remove material from the barrel channel or glass bed it. I do like the ergo's of the stock, personally, but they are heavy and soft. Good stocks, nonetheless...

I think they help with recoil as well.. Definitely the design of it.
