Pure ballistic discussion if packing a 4” M_18 loaded with CCI stingers, what advantages will a similar 4” K frame M_48 loaded with 22 magnum hollow points offer?
BTW my M_18 will hold 2” groups @ 25m rested with Stingers, always been slightly interested in a M_48 or 648...🤔

Heavier bullets for deeper penetration, for one thing. Instead of Stingers, I'd use Velocitors. If you're getting good accuracy out of Stingers, you're a lucky guy, they've never shown me anything like good accuracy.

I’ve shown CCI Stingers a ton of latitude as I love the velocity, some guns shoot them some don’t.
The results on small game speak for themselves as spectacular kills are the norm

If you buy the m18 it will work every time. M48's are known to hang up because of the ball powder used in the shells. Plus 22 ammo is affordable so you can shoot it all the time.

Have the model 18 wondering what the ballistic advantages are in a 4" barrel?

Back in the 80s, I clocked some Stingers and some Maxi Mags from a 5 1/2” Single Six. The velocities were very close, and the size of the holes poked through bars of laundry soap were about the same as well.
No smartphone pics available.🤔
What fresh Hell is this?

I have a M18 on the way. I'd stick with the 18 vs the mag due to ammo availability and cost. If you want the versatility of both the LR and the mag consider a Ruger Single Six. I foolishly let one go several years ago.

If you're getting good accuracy out of Stingers, you're a lucky guy, they've never shown me anything like good accuracy. I get mixed results out of both stingers and velocitors, in various firearms. Wanna say that it's easier for me to find guns that shoot stingers well, than it is for velocitors. My little Ruger LCR is very precise with stingers, although I did have one that sorta squibbed on me a few weeks ago. It cleared the barrel but hit the dirt in front of the target. First ever problem for stingers in my experience.

I don't think I've gotten good accuracy with any of the hyper velocity 22LR ammo, of course all guns are different and what I might think of as not good paper punching accuracy might be just fine for some else's hunting accuracy.

41 Your question seems more academic than practical. No matter how you slice it, ballistically speaking the .22 mag is always going to have an edge. The more interesting question is...Do you ACTUALLY need that edge? What do you expect to be shooting at? Do you think a .22 magnum will make a meaningful difference in the field? I always ended up selling my .22 magnums because they're not dramatically more powerful than a .22LR. Meaning, it doesn't really open up shots at larger game, and doesn't really add up to longer range shots from a 4" open sight revolver. For me, if I expect I'll be shooting at game that is beyond a .22LR, I just switch to a centerfire. My S&W 617 and my Python drop into the same holster, so I just switch to that. So there's the practical side. Now to the impractical side... OF COURSE YOU SHOULD BUY THE M48!!! Why, because you've always wanted one, and they're damn cool!

I had a M17 and wanted a 22 mag revolver. M48 S&W’s are quite rare here and I went a slightly different route. Eventually I found a smith locally that had a spare 22LR cylinder. He also happened to be a S&W trained armourer. I had him ream out the spare 22 LR cylinder to 22 Mag and fit the new cylinder to the M17 frame. This way I had a convertible M17. The difference between the M48 and the M17/18 is the barrel diameter, 0.224 vs 0.222.
As a bonus the accuracy of the 22 Mag cylinder was better than the 22 LR cylinder, which I attributed to the tighter barrel specs. There was one problem though, the higher pressure 22 Mag shells pushed the firing pin bushing back slightly into the frame. The 22 Mag cases were ballooning out slightly at the rear making the cylinder sticky to rotate. Anyhow, the smith made a new, slightly longer firing pin bushing and fitted it precisely and it has worked perfectly since.

I’ve had 2 model 48’s. A 6 inch and a 8 3/8 inch barrel pistol. Loved them both. Finally sold the 6 inch. I personally think there is a significant difference between the magnum and long rifle. Targets can’t tell the difference but game can. Hasbeen

I also believe the 22 mag from a short barreled revolver can be a devastating personal defense weapon.

I would venture to say that you will likely get more expansion out of the Stingers than the 22 Mag hollow points. Looking up ballistic by the inch, BBTI, real world velocity of a 4 5/8 inch barrel Rough Rider is only around 1050 fps. I doubt that the 22 Mag bullet will expand at that velocity. It's time to do some terminal ballistic testing. BTW, Stinger clocked 1085 fps out of a 4 inch Ruger Bearcat.
