872 reportedly will do about what H-870 will do. I've never used 870, so I'm going by what I've read.

I have some vintage H-4831 that still smells good, shoots good. It's got to be 60 yrs old or even older. As long as they're stored and cared for properly, it can be surprising how long some of those old powders will last and still perform.

Buy 872 at this site from Jeff Bartlett. Jeff knows his stuff and is easy to talk to. Give him a call.

Been looking at his site, but was wonder about the shipping charges. Except for Hazmat is their any other shipping charge. I have emailed him so just waiting on a reply.

I bought a big jug of WC872 a few years ago. It was so cheap I just couldn't pass it up, but had no idea what I'd use it for. I've read H870 data is interchangeable with it. I saw a thread on another site where a guy was running 85gr of H870 under a 200gr NPT for a little over 2900fps in his 300 H&H. Thinking about maybe working up to that load in my H&H to see how it works.

I have 3ea 8 pound jugs of WC872 that has shown to be slower burning than H870.

I have no 870 to compare with. I can only relate that my big jug of 872 is about the same as my big jug of 869 per my experience loading my 26 Nosler. I’m glad I have big jugs. That way, I don’t have to worry about lot to lot issues for quite a while.

When I purchased my WC872 I was told to use H870 load data and I had to use all that could compress into the 300 RUM case to get it to work and that was with 200 grain bullets. I was 4 or 5 grains above the max charge of H870

Works well for a 300 H&H in a pre 64 M-70.
Crimping may be necessary in a 375 H&H early M-70,
with 350 gr bullets. But it has a 25 inch barrel. Initial loading of 71 grs with 350 gr Barnes was too mild.
It may leave unburned powder if not pushed a bit.

H870 was the powder to use in my 7mm Rem mag with heavy bullets till I tried RL 26 some old manuals used to show H870 one load at max easy to load for and usually accurate and fast and dirty.

My ancient Hodgdon Manual shows 73.0 gr H870 as max for the .264 Win / 140 gr combo.

Wondering if any of you old timers ever used H450. Must have been some sort of pull down military powder.

H450 was in between 4350 and 4831 approximately in burn rate, kind burned like IMR 4831 but in ball powder. It could be flashy in some cases where loading density was not quite high enough, 264 win , /7mm mags of the time. I never used enough to make a good case for it then it disappeared......

That was my first 7mm Rem load. 80-81 grains of H870 and a 140 Partition. Not sure how fast it was but man it shot amazing. Used that load forever.

I licked H 450. Seemed to be the ball version of H 4831. My old Lyman 55 dropped it pretty close.
I avoid discontinued powders. Go to the trouble of developing a load and then you run short on powder.
Besides there are better choices now with the extreme powders. Hasbeen
