I've developed a nice load for my 30/30 Winchester mod 94. It an angle eject model they call the Sporter. It's nicely checkered, with a 24inch half hexagon barrel. Just a nice looking rifle. It groups inside an inch at 50 yards and just outside it at 100. At 50 yards it's about 2 inches high and dead on at 100. I can't use my Magneto Speed Chrony due the tube mag, and I'd like to get an idea what the muzzle velocity is. The load is 33gn Varget, CCI 200 primer, 160gn Hornady FTX and Hornady brass. I'm think around 2,200fps. Any ideas are welcome. JD

The closest load that I have chronographed was .308” 170 gr. Remington bullet/Winchester cases/WLR primers/32.0 gr. Varget. This was from a 24" barrel 94AE. 2110 fps, 22.0 standard dev. I made a bunch during Obama Scare I, when I couldn't get my usual 170 Speer and W748.

I've been wondering if it is possible to mount the Magnetospeed upside down on top of the barrel?

I have wondered the same thing about the Magnetospeed mounting for lever rifles. After all you're just looking to get vel from the load and you already know the accuracy. I've almost jumped on a Labradar but can't really justify the price.

This load is not the same but I have a 30-30 single shot with a 26" barrel. Shooting a 165 grain Sierra Game King with Varget I get 2210 fps with 32 grains and 2248 with 33 grains. This is using a Shooting Chrony 10 feet from the muzzle. I am using Fed 210 primers and this is a spitzer bullet.

Might make few FPS difference in the barrel length

Mount the Magnetospeed upside down, on the front sight side. Ive done this with my Magnetospeed on several lever guns.

It dropped 1-3/8" at 100.

I do, it's an angle eject, 2-7 scope Then there's no way you should be 2" high at 50 with a 100 yard zero with a velocity of 2200.

2" high at 50 and 'dead on' at a hundred is velocity of around 1350-1400......
2" high at 50 and 1/2" high at 100 is around 1500fps
3/4' AT 50 AND 3/4" AT 100 IS around 2000fps.......

Have you used this scope before?? Are all the screws tight?? Are you shooting off of a rest?? How many times are you shooting at each distance?? Show us pictures of the targets.....
How does it shoot with 'off-the-shelf' ammo, NOT homemade??

I know I'm late on this but I wanted to share, because I've just recently been testing using Varget with 150gr Hawk bullets in my 30-30, Rem brass and CCI 200 Primers. I settled on 33.5gr of Varget for an average velocity of 2,218fps, and very good accuracy, and very little spread in velocity with a 5 shot group, 9fps the last 3 shot group i tried.
This is my first use of Varget in my 30-30, I've pretty much given it to LVR Powder, and I like IMR3031. But I will say this for Varget comparing it to the other powders. Its no speed demon, but very accurate all across the various loads tested, regardless of velocity! 3031 always has a sweet spot where velocity and accuracy come together, but never a speed demon either! LVR is amazing in both my 30-30's! And in case anyone decides to try Accurate 4064, I've had very good accuracy but certainly lacks on velocity. Good powder!
And I've found the Shooters Calculator charts to be about identical to my tested trajectory! But 2" high at 50yds with a 150gr at anything near 2200fps, is approximately still going to be near 2" high at 100yds, and zeroed at aprox 130-150 yds. But this is with iron sights .75" above the bore. A scope at 1.5" above bore will change everything, how much I don't know? I'm an Iron sight shooter. This is all out of a 24" barrel Win.
