Damn! 15 an hour?? Even the manufacturing here doesn't start beyond 12 or so. And I am not in a depressed area, just a greedy and short sighted one apparently.

Hard to convince them to go to work, when the government pays them so much to stay home. It really is as simple as that.

Government dole literally pays more. Gave up trying to get lunch in urban areas.

We've had fast food places built locally in the last six months that have not opened because they can't get help.

This was touched on above-

My local congressman calls in to our local radio station every Friday morning to give a 10 minute run down on what happened in DC this past week. Today he said he was on his way to a manufacturer in our district that wanted to visit with him. They were thinking of shutting their doors because they can't get help. Reason given, with all the stimulus money, extended unemployment, additional unemployment, people were being paid too much money to stay at home instead of joining the workforce.

Food service out here has struggled to hire for a while. Lot of competition for good employees. Fry cooks making $20+ an hour. I’d bet McD’s even starts at $15.

Gonna be the end of the Dolla’ menus!

Had a young black man come up to me in a parking lot and say nice truck. Thanks! Said he was down on his luck and asked if I'd like my truck washed and I asked how much. He's say's to me $500 for a detail and I started laughing . "pal your still down on your luck" WTF!

The extra unemployment and stimulus checks are the reason. I don't blame them for not taking a $12 an hour job when the government will pay them $18 to sit at home, most of us would do the same. It's not as simple as "just pay more". If a restaurant hires a bunch of workers at $20 an hour for a $10 an hour job to compete with the handouts they've pretty much set the price of that labor at $20 permanently which they can't pay forever and survive. When (if) the handouts end the labor market will adjust and if you kept the doors open with $20 an hour labor then you're stuck with it. Better to cut back the hours or shut the doors temporarily than to memorialize bubble wages. It's the same as reloading component manufacturers not expanding their operation every time a dem opens their mouth about gun control and the shelves get cleaned out. If you add all the capacity during the bubble you're stuck with it when the bubble bursts.

heck with $8 patty flipping job

A person could draw that state and fed unemployment, have a stimulus check deposited and $4-5k Earned Income Credit ‘refund’ all swirling about their sphere.

And scrap metal is back up to $150 a ton.

I paid $300 about 10 years ago for a complete homeboy detail. Mobil wash crew runs around here, even makes house calls.

But, I’m talking bout these 2 guys did door jambs, engine compartment, tires, wheels, wheel wells, pressure wash underneath, Q-tips around all the vents, skittles and pickles out of the seat belt in the back, the glass, grime out of the buttons, hand wax, Armour all, vacuum.

Guess it depends on what your guy was going to do or what your understanding of what a full detail is.

Bread and circuses. Who will bake the bread then give it away? The workman is worthy of their hire but business owners should not have to compete with govt. handouts that poison the labor pool. Limit welfare to the truly needy then market forces will establish realistic pay and benefit standards to be competitive.

Who shattered the economy? It was massive govt. over reach and we were frightened into submission. Until the govt. becomes frightened of the people the slide into the 3rd world standard will continue.

Read a news article this morning about this. One lady, a short-order cook, received $800 every two weeks from the gummint. She makes $700 every two weeks working. Pretty easy math.

BTW, she went back to work anyway. Must have some personal standards. Most would stay on the dole, in fact, most apparently are.

Done the same but they had mobile set ups or storefronts. They did like you said and I was very pleased.

I've heard that some of those who went back to work for less money than being unemployed did so because they figured that the government gravy train wouldn't last. They don't trust the government to keep up the free money for very long. Imagine that ! Distrust of the government.

We went around finding broken bikes we could haul off for them or do a chore for. Built bikes out of parts. We made our money off selling kindling and firewood in winter, working family construction and pulpwood crews in summer. Had to save that for shotgun shells, boots etc., though.

Businesses crying over wages don't look so good when compared to those who pay. Just like the fast food and gas stations complain when a Buc-cee's steals all the employees and undercuts gas prices. There have been law suits over it. It's protectionism and quasi-socialism at work by people who claim to be conservatives. Clearly free market capitalism beats it.

All the local Micky-D's are looking for help around here And starting wage is $15.00,not to shabby for a high schooler.
What concerns me though is all the freebies and people not working and contributing back in ,
Where is the money going to come from to keep stuff funded?

NY is trying to pass a .55 cents /gallon of gas tax hike, that's where, more taxes on those of us who do work.

My son owns two business here in town. One is a restaurant. He has cut back hours because of the same issue. No workers available. As long as the slackers can make $8+ an hour sitting on their butts, they won't go back to work.

That's simple economics there.

But, if she only nets $700 biweekly, she needs a new career.
