I've been wondering how much barrel length on the m71 matters. Is there a big difference with balance between 20 and 24 inch.

No. A little sight radius. Other than that the 24" looks better to some including me.

I have both and also have a 348 Ackley and 450 Alaskan

I have had 20” and 24” Brownings in 348 and found the shorter barrel more lively and better pointing.

I have each and have hunted with both styles. While the 20" carbines tend to swing quicker, I think its generally agreed on that the 24" barrel "hangs" better on the should as the extra 4 inches of barrel help to balance the rifle once its lifted and leveled for sighting. Its a subtle difference, but I notice it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the looks of the carbines much more. Not to mention they carry through the woods easier. I have a deluxe carbine that out shoots all other 71s I've owned (rifle or carbine)... so given that example, I'd say the loss of 4" of barrel doesn't necessarily have an affect on accuracy.

I wondered the same thing and when I turned my new production Mod. 71 into the Ackley Improved version I had the barrel cut to 22 inches. Blow the case out to get more velocity and cut the barrel off to loose velocity and pay extra for it. I am living proof that "rifle Loonies" exist!

Biggest difference is the price.
