Looking for a scope to put on a 308 win. Max range 1000 yards. Looking at a Bushnell LRHS2. SWFA seems to be constantly backordered? Any other recommendations?

Currently my "target" 308 (20" SPS Tact 1:12 varmint contour) has an 8.5-25x50 30MM Leupold. The favorite scope I had on that rifle was a 4.5-14x50 Zeiss Conquest w/target turrets. I no longer have the Zeiss because the turrets and power ring are backwards from Leupold/Nightforce.

NRA Highpower limits zoom to 4X at 600 years, and PRS has a military category that limits zoom to 6x at 1,000 yards, and plenty of people are hitting the targets.

More zoom does not equal more precision. Precision is a factor of the rifle and the ammo.

More zoom does let you see hits and misses better.

If you're not runnin and gunnin in competition, the SWFA 6X MQ will get you there.

Snipers in Vietnam were using 4x and 10X optics and the 10X was considered to top magnification by some. More than 10X, and mirage becomes a factor, as well.

Sounds like you're on the right track, IMO.

For the most part, I agree.

Precision is also a function of reticle and target subtension, in addition to rifle and ammo.

More magnification can help you see hits/misses up to a point, but FOV (especially in a dynamic situation) and mirage play a role, as well, and that limits the useful level of magnification for spotting your shots and making follow-ups.

There is an ugly SWFA on the sample list. Give it a try. Never been unhappy with mine...

I put a Vortex 3-15 ×50 LHT on mine. Very good scope, illuminated and 20 oz. Unless you need FFP, this is prefect choice. I just put one on my 340 Wby too.

I don't think a 308 is a good 1000 yard gun. Good 900 yard gun though

Ideally 800 yards but will stretch it to 1000 yards. I have been to a competition that goes to 1800 yards but didn't even attempt it. I used a different 308 for that shoot. Running the 155 scenar and varget.

Sadly, the 308 is outclassed for those types of shoots these days.

Unfortunately. If I knew what I was doing at 1500 and 1800 yards I would have tried. Still learning at 1000yards.

Used LRTSi, LRHSi, or new LRHS 2. My preference is the LRTSi.

I have a Burris Tactical 8-40x 50mms with illuminated reticle. It can be had for about $1100 or less. It's a decent piece of you're looking for an F-class type of scope. Has 1/8 MOA dials, side paralax. Burris stands behind their stuff, lifetime warranty.
