Once again, great pics!

I smashed into one with my shoulder while riding my motorcycle last summer. He was slow to abandon roadkill.

Very nice pictures - always a pleasure to see her pics. When I was stationed in Columbus MS, we had a constant problem with the buzzards that orbited at pattern altitude. Took very little to totally destroy a J85 engine, and we probably went through at least 1 engine destroyed a month. Our instructors got very good at single engine procedures in the T38..

During ZZ Top’s “Tejas “ Tour in the late 70’s, they had a bunch of live critters they trucked around on the tour and staked out on stage with them. A Bison, Longhorns, Armadillos, and some Turkey Vultures.
Saw an interview with the drummer, Frank Beard, who said they’d post the Buzzards on a pole above the drums.
He said you damn sure didn’t do that but once ! 🤠

I guess we have a few 6,000 year believers. Not that many, though.

I like them better than those nasty acting black vultures that kill calves and lambs. They don't always wait until something dies, they go after helpless critters and peck their eyes out and keep on until they kill it. The black vultures have nearly taken over around these parts of KY and the turkey vultures aren't seen as much as they used to be.

You can get a permit to kill them now in TX if you run cattle and they are going after your calf’s.

Fond memories, such as they could be given certain "conditions" of that tour hitting our town!

Thanks for the comments. Yes, they have a purpose in life/death, but I know very little about them. Always wondered if they score a meal on a daily basis or function in a feast/famine mode. Cookie scored several waterfowl shots and nearly wore the hair off of several rock chucks. Thought the buzzards were the most interesting though.

Feast or famine. In captivity they’ve gone two weeks without eating with little apparent distress, most birds woulda been dead inside of a week.

In flight their wings actually notch into place so they don’t have to employ muscles to hold them out, so in flight they expend very little energy all day long.

Then of course there’s their sense of smell, compared to most vultures they’re actually low-level foraging specialists.

IIRC the New World Vultures properly speaking ain’t raptors at all, most closely related to storks and cranes.

Young Earth Creationists will generally accept 6000 to perhaps 20,000 years. Ah, the ‘ol Darwinism tripe — even some top atheist scientists know it’s road kill but it’s the fake news that our scientific community and academia is permeated with. It’s a failed dogma but ensconced in the concrete of careers and reputations.

There is a burgeoning amount of new information you could apprise yourself of Hawkeye just so you would be informed. Let me know.

I will agree there are environmental pressures on a “Kind” that will effect survival thus allowing micro-changes to rise up.

But not macro-evolution. There’ are myriad arguments that refute it. In my life time the “accepted” and age of earth has gone up twice from the original 2-3 billion years. Always changing the details to suit their outcome.

Kinda like politicians.

You are right, the smaller black headed vulture is much more aggressive and will run the turkey buzzard off a carcass. I have had 3 live calves eaten by the blacks but I don't recall any live ones attacked by the turkey variety.
