1. 22 long rifle. Fun and small varmints 2. 223 Fun and bigger varmints 3. 243 Win. Women, kids, impaired hunters 4. 30-06. Deer size game 5. 338 Win mag Can do anything a 300 can, plus will work for plains game and bears 6. 375 H&H African game, bears 7. 458 Lott. Big African game 8. 12 gauge. Birds 9. 20 gauge. Women, kids, birds 10. 45 Acp. Self defense, wifey shoots 45 no prob
A 9mm might be better for number 10. You can shoot anything with one of those rifles a big pistol would be suitable for. Most of my picks are based on availability except the 458 Lott

I'd need a "7" in there instead of 2 shotguns. Make mine a 7mm-08 or 7x57.

Only had 10, only my useless opinion. I don’t think cap and ball is a cartridge. I was thinking a cased cartridges. This is like picking the ten best pro quarterbacks of all time.

Last couple guns i bought were a 25-06 and a 22-250 and it reminded me that I could have just bought those two 20 years ago and invested the rest lol
Even those "overrated" cartridges would still do 90 plus percent of what any of us really need.
Probably could have retired and hunted more and not missed a thing.
Oh well. Rifle Looney flu is what it is.

How can you have 2 perfect shotgun sizes? It's either one or the other...cannot have 2, which means it's a 12 gauge.
I'll give you a 22LR Lose the .223 and make it a 22-250 No on the 243, a 250 sav is better 30-06 yes 45 acp yes
270 win....yes
338 Win mag - no....make it a 44-40 375 H&H - no......make it a 45-110 458 Lott - no.......make it a 50-90

I could live happily ever after with.
.22LR .22 mag. .223 .30-30 .30-06 .357 mag. 12 gauge
I have a bunch of others but they mostly sit in the safe and collect dust while the above go hunting anymore.

I've never been a fan of the 30-06 so I'd replace that with the 300 H&H. Even though I have a 338 it would be replaced in the line up with the 7x57.

.22LR .223 Rem 30/06 9x19mm 44 Special/Magnum 12 gauge
Would realistically cover everything that I need a gun to do but would make life really boring and full of more compromise than I like.

A 6.5X55 should be in there - I’d replace the 243 with it and it’s literally grandfathered in😄

22 rimfire 223 308 12ga 9mm 44Mag
That covers all the bases really, but if we need 10, let's add:
17 HMR 30-06 45-70 50 BMG

There is some redundancy between #1 and #7. But seriously, if this is about the 10 most perfect cartridges for a rifle, no way does a SAAMI .458 Lott stand a chance against the SAAMI .458 Winchester Magnum. Even if the SAAMI .458 WIN is kept down to 3.340" COL and 60,000 psi MAP, and the SAAMI .458 Lott is allowed 3.600" COL and 62,500 MAP, they are within 50 fps of each other with a 500-grainer from a 24" barrel. Physics does not lie. Terry Wieland does not understand this and really needs to get out more. Throat.

Most of my picks are based on availability except th e 458 Lott Hanco, good list. # 4 could be .270, .308, or you choice and still not wrong. If you go with the 270, you can ax the .243 and add the 7mm stw for the reach out and touch someone category. For number 10, I've carried both, but with modern bullets and modern pistol designs give the nod to the 9mm.

I’m wondering why you are hunting women, kids and impaired people. I mean, if they are impaired that can’t be sporting 😁
