- Savage 110E action
- 6mm Rem
- 7.5 twist. 5R, 23" X-Caliber barrel, Savage magnum contour.
- Bolt fluted by SSS
- Action and bolt Black Ice coated.
- EGW 20 moa base.
- Burris Zee signature with 10 moa inserts....

I've owned this rifle for 30+ years. This is its 7th barrel. This gun was last a 6.5-06 that didn't shoot well (different barrel manufacturer.) Barrel company warrantied the barrel and it still didn't shoot. I parted it out and the action has been in the safe for 5 years....

I bought prechambered barrel and the tools and installed barrel myself. My first two loads I tried 3/8" and 1/2".

I had a 6mm Rem model 788, I got rid of it in a minute of insanity, that rifle would really put em in there. Shot many whitetails with it too.
I'd buy another if I found one.

Were both the 6.5-06 attempts chambered by the same reamer and/or 'smith?

Nope. A highly revered smith chambered the first one. Then the barrel maker accused the smith of botching the job. Then the smith got pissed and it turned into a pissing match. In the end the barrel maker agreed to warranty, but they wanted to do the work. I was happy with that solution. Unfortunately, the gun still didn't shoot. I started to think maybe something was wrong with the action somehow, because what are the odds of two bad barrels? Clearly not the case... I believe they had a bad batch of steel or their 6.5 button was toast. No way to know...

What motivated the choice of 6mm Rem?

I'm a big fan of 6mm and 6.5's. High B.C. bullets and low recoil. I've always thought the 6mm was superior to the 243. I'm not hung up on short actions either. I currently own a 243 and 6 SLR too, had a 6 creed in the past...

I'm not sure I'd want to be tied to 6mm Rem brass.

Really like your rifle. Don’t see many 6mm Remingtons lately. It’s really a great caliber... been shooting one since the mid ‘70’s. Used the REM 700 in SD prairie dog shooting. Loaded some 55 grain Nosler BT that chronograph 4012 fps. Really did the job on those dogs. I sold my Savage that I had rebarreled to a friend who wanted it real bad. Now my gunsmith is building me another one.

Thanks for replies.

I have owned several 243's, a 6 creed, a 6SLR, and finally a 6mm. I've wanted one since high school, not sure why it took me so long. Velocity wise, it out performs all my others. Plus it has a nice long neck. Guess people are hung up with the short action craze???

I have always felt the 6mm or 6mmai would be awesome on a long action... Mine is a adl 700 I picked up in Montana several summers ago.. Haven't shot it much, hope to change that this summer...
