Closest I have is a 38-55, but that is kinda wimpy. Probably the .06 with a brake.A replaced shoulder a few years ago limits recoil tolerance.

My pard killed one a few years back with a .38-55...but in all fairness it was an intentional frontal brain shot.

That is a very good price especially for including lodging and butchering

I used a 7mm08 on mine. 160 grain accubond. Ain't going lie I muffed the first shot. Turned into a bit of rodeo. Once a proper shot was placed at the base of the skull things ended quickly. Ask the outfitter about shot placement. Most want headshots. Body shots are effective. But they can be slow. Biggest problem is the rest of the herd goes nuts when it smells blood. They start pounding on the wounded one. Gets the adrenaline going and takes a long time for them to realize their dead on their feet.

When I went the outfitter told me he had shot several for meat for himself. Always dropped them with one shot. 17 Remington in the ear.

Looks like the AZ National Park Service is opening up applications for a depredation hunt pretty soon..

I've killed a few of them, I have a friend who has a bunch on a 3k acre ranch SW SD about 6 hours from denver. I can put you in touch. they don't do final processing but will skin and quarter it for transport home and provide lodging and meals. you'll want it to age a week or more in a cooler anyway so having it cut up immediately would be a turn off for me. I can get you a number if you want to call him to talk prices and availability.

Thanks CO 1135. I think I have two lined up here close to home and they will skin/quarter it. Then I have access to a walk in cooler and someone to butcher it for me. I know how to do that myself, but I'm too gimped up anymore to handle something that big.

I have to admit that a bison hunt has a certain appeal.

The Grand Canyon,(North Rim Bison), are looking for Volunteers, this Fall, to help thin the Herd! FYI!

The chance to get one of those tags will be about like drawing a sheep tag in CO. Plus it is 800 miles away for me.I got back from there 4 weeks ago

^^^ I believe I read somewhere that there is a rather large push to have this hunt cancelled, but I would be surprised if there was no opposition. Hope some of you get to hunt them! It is some tasty meat , for sure!

Right now the Feds are looking to clear out some Bison from the Grand Canyon area. I will not be pursuing this hunt for several reasons but mostly, you do all the work of hiking in, shooting, cleaning and quartering the animal, and packing it out. You pay for this privilege and DO NOT get to keep any of the meat, bone, or hide. It all goes to the tribe, but hey you get to pay for the experience of taking a Bison.

Yes it says volunteer but the cost of hunting is not reimbursed, so not free.

Hard pass. Besides, instead of quartering the animal and packing it out, I would have to cut it into much smaller pieces and make several packing trips out.

Are they still offering bison hunts? Looks like they have/had a neighboring ranch that wasn't happy with the Bison...

Yeah, they still do some hunts, and the pissed off neighbor was a texan. I grew up with them, but haven't seen Monte for a couple years. I think his boys do the hunts now. I don't think they'd let a hunter after their white bufflers, tho......
