Call me crazy (everyone else does) but I am thinking about a high cap. 9mm 1911. The only current production one I know of is Armscor model 51679. I know Remington made a 45 hi cap but not sure about a 9mm. Para had several models of a 9mm as well as 45 back in the day.
What is the opinion on Armscor vs Para, which is a better buy (assuming you can find either)
Like I said this is just a crazy idea as I love 1911 pistols but really don't know much about the high cap ones. What are the pitfalls I should know before going down this road?
If it matters any, I would prefer a shorter slide and barrel than a full size 5" but don't know if that is even an option.

The RIAs are available, which is a big deal right now, I'm not sure the others are easy to find in normal times, let alone these days. A local shop has a 9mm RIA, and have had it for quite awhile, for under $700 right now. I looked it over and decided I'd wait it out and get a single-stack Springfield RO instead, even though the capacity was down and the price higher. Spare mags aren't easy to find for the wide frames, either, even RIA only has the 40/10mm wide mags right now.

I think the STI is probably the best of the available choices, but it's priced that way, too. I haven't seen a new Remington/Para in a long time, the Armscor guns turn up fairly often, and are pretty fair guns. I've got a couple of their single-stack pistols that are fun to shoot, and at least as accurate as an out of box Ruger or Colt guns.

I don't understand the draw of 9mm in a 1911/2011 for defense. For the weight of the gun, I'd rather have a more powerful caliber. The longer, skinny bullet of the 9mm is more prone to feeding issues than 40/45/10. If I were to pick a 9mm 2011, it would be the STI, hands down. STI (now called Staccato) has been pumping out 9mm 2011's for decades in various competition models - they are know what they are doing. They recently started offering 9mm in personal defense guns due to demand - previously 9mm was reserved for shooting games (for good reason in my opinion). In any case, magazines are finicky and hard to come by. Drop a mag on the feed lips and it might need to be retuned. 9mm 2011's are not Glocks and require maintenance and knowledgeable users, plug-and-play they are generally not. However, due to the heavier weight, fine triggers, and smooth actions, they make awesome shooters, which is why the competition crowd flocked to them.

the CZ might work, would like to see and hold one before chunking down that kind of cash

The current crop of high end 2011 9mm’s run and shoot phenomenal. Also, a full-size gun with a great grip angle, good trigger, milled for an optic and the ability to carry 20+ rounds of 9mm is a nice combination. Downside is that a good one hurts the wallet a bit.

If I ever saw a Para Ord 9mm, I would have bought it.

the only Para I would be buying would be one of the earlier ones made in Canada. They were sweet shooters.

I’ve had a RIA and a few STIs.

For a full size steel frame gun I’d get the RIA from Hayes Custom Guns. They can be had for $2000ish and are worth it.

For a lighter full size gun I’d get the Staccato.

For a carry gun like you’re describing I’d get the Staccato C2. It’s the same size as a Glock 19 and light enough to carry.

Do the RIA and STI's use Para mags or?

Wilson Combat made a hi cap 45 , not sure about a 9mm
The 45s were polymer framed and pretty sweet

just went to the local gun store, none of their wholesale places had a RIA in stock.

They didn't have a CZ75 either

STI uses STI mags. Their new mags are very reliable off the shelf.

RIA uses Para pattern mags.
