My girlfriend was stung by a hornet while out golfing. She ran into the Pro Shop and cried,
"Help, I've been stung by a killer hornet out on the golf course!"

"Where?", asked the Pro? "Between the first and second holes, replied my girlfriend.

"Hmm..." says the Pro, "Sounds like your stance is too wide."

That’s what mailboxes are for. Works with cats, shut em in the mailbox and beat the [bleep] outta it before the mailman gets there.

If your mailman is a prick, I guess.

The bald face hornet is pretty common NW Calif and Southern Oregon timberlands. We disturbed nests a few times while high lead logging, they immediately go after the rigging crew with a vengeance. The amazing thing is that they attack on a straight fly-in homing path, right between the eyes at the bridge of your nose. They don't alight and then sting, they bore in at high speed and in some feat of gymnastics instantly drill the victim at speed. If the brim of your aluminum hardhat is pulled low, they hit above the rim, you can actually feel and hear the hit, tink, tink. Well, sometimes you can hear it, over the screaming of four grown men acting like girl scouts as they scatter like quail (including me). The only good thing is they are hell on yellowjackets, knock them out of the air, wrestle them down on the ground and kill them.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

We had one years ago that completely covered a window at our N.C. mountain house. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing!

I wonder if the blizzard hurt them?

Probably not.

It killed the good stuff, but left the bad stuff stronger for the experience. crazy

That’s last year’s nest, I’d be surprised if it’s still active.

I had one behind a rehab a few years ago, 12 ga with #8 fixed that problem. It disintegrated the nest from 40’. I hate those little buggers.

As far as I can tell, bald-faced hornet die off in the winter, fertilized queens starting from scratch every year.

Our tanager species are wasp specialists, eat em like popcorn. A few winters back I saw an out-of range Western Tanager around here, which should have been down in Mexico for the winter, vainly checking out a hornets nest high in a tree. Empty.

Very cool. After learning that I had to read up on our Scarlet Tanager - apparently they beat and rub the stinger out of the wasp on a branch before gulping them down. Badass bird.

That's what we always did. We don't see them as often as we used to. They sure do WHIZ around when that nest hits the ground.
