I posted on the other Smith thread currently running about eyeing a M629-4 at the LGS for $699. Today I headed to my gunsmith that has the same LGS en route. I dropped by the same LGS to handle the 6" M629-4 as I only looked at it through glass. It appeared and felt near new. They had the box and paperwork so it came home for $700 out the door.

I don't think there's a question anywhere in the world, that couldn't be answered with that.

Yep. Nice find. Post-MIM, but pre-lock, so good to go in my book. Oh, wait, I think I see a hammer mounted firing pin, so that might be an early enough -4 to have the forged hammer and trigger instead of the MIM.

Scratch that. It was the 629-5 that introduced the MIM parts.

I change my "nice find" to very nice find.

It lacks one upgrade that came with -5 of a gusset that ran down the frame below the blast shield. And some say the frame mounted firing pin of the -5 is an upgrade, but ya get MIM with those 2.

Otherwise, the -4 is probably the latest of the greatest.

Damn nice find. I've got a -3 which is the last square but, but had I seen this for that money, I'd have it too.

It's a damned fine sixgun and you got an excellent deal on it.

Excellent find Ed.
Deals like that are nonexistent here in Michigan. It seems our handgun and especially revolver prices are much higher here.

Nice pickup, Ed. Glad you were able to get back over there and get it.

Same here. Would not be able to get that gun for that price here.

That's a good find, and at a fair price. The -4 prices have gone through the roof for some configurations.

As much as I like goncalo alves target grips and especially the smooth rosewoods the Hogues on your new gun are superb for practical shooting and DA work. I don't think there are any better for DA work. Mb

I had the same grip on my 29-3 for along time for hunting, camp, and trail. Good if your hands are wet or dirty.

Endless choices for an N frame sq bt though.
Mine has thin Alta pannels and a Tyler now.

I have made a handful of purchases over the past couple years at this store. Always more than fair and most, though not this one, on consignment. As I just can't do rubber and finger grooves in particular I dug through the grip boxes and found these Eagle's. A Patridge front is en route from Brownell's. My Smith's don't see boomer rounds, my Ruger Bisley's come into play at that point. This is a round butt piece.
