What are everyone’s thoughts on currently available 1907 slings? Which are the best and worst? I’m looking at different options for one to use on a hunting rifle and experienced advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have used an Eric Hollis sling the last couple of years shooting high power. He builds a good sling.

I prefer the M1 web sling, but Hollis makes a good, traditional leather 1907.
Les Tam makes a very nice 1907 too. http://www.lestamslings.com/

You might want to look at the Turner Biothanes too if you want something that won't stretch and doesn't require any care.

Les Tam was the first to make 1907 Service Rifle Slings to withstand the hard use of the competitive shooter. To this day his are the gold standard. While he taught Ron Brown and Eric Hollis his craft, there are differences still that make it worthwhile to seek out a Tam sling. Compare the frogs (hooks) for one.

Good to know of current sources for quality M1907's. I bought a few MRT slings that had DOD labels from the 1980's on them but I don't see them around anymore, just clones that aren't of the same quality, ie: painted steel frogs and rivets instead of bronze.

My thoughts....

the 1907 in general: after shooting a vintage military rifle match with an issue Swiss sling I came to the conclusion that whoever (or whatever committee) developed the 1907 created one of the best inventions ever for rifle shooting.

Slings for Service Rifle: The big thick heavy, (slightly longer than original, you need that for AR-15), 1907 slings from Hollis, Tam, Turner, Ron Brown or whatever Creedmoor is selling are GREAT for service rifle! (the M1 WWII style cotton canvas web sling is also great, probably dollar for dollar a better deal).

But these slings are just too stiff and heavy to put on a hunting rifle. Unless you are a high power competitor with a heavier than usual hunting rifle with a floated barrel and you really like sitting and prone strapped into a sling, in which case you already know what you like.

A well used, getting too soft and stretchy, 1907 that retired from camp perry might be OK for a hunting rifle.

the thin, but stiff when new, MRT slings (M1/M14 length, too short for AR) are disappointing for serious service rifle but might be OK on a hunting rifle.

the cheap feeling, thin leather, (but priced almost as much as Creedmoor gets for a good sling) 1907 pattern style slings in 1" or 1.25" are probably my favorite for hunting rifles, light and soft, and nearly useless for serious service rifle.

different tool for a different job.

ya'll shoot good!

1907s are absolutely worthless on a hunting rifle. They were good in theory prior to the first world war for known forward threats prior to lightweight bipods and they are good for national match style competition shooting. Thats about it imho.

I have one in my hands as i type this...ive tried to adapt it to hunting applications. It won't work

I've used one for years - better than a bipod for shooting over grass when sitting, and as a bonus you can use it to stop your rifle falling off your shoulder. Turner biothane, great quality and super durable, if a little heavier than some other options.

I use a 1 1/4 Hunter brand cheapie for my hunting rifle. You can do a good loop or a hasty sling along with it actually staying on your shoulder when slung during a trek. I use a 1" on my 22s same reason. Garand is dressed with the web sling and if I want to do some serious highpower, use a Turner.

You know you can walk around hunting with the sling in position on your arm.
