If you get those, then you can rebuild. The rest is just stuff and things that are not as important as the 4 "P"s. It would be easier if you have good insurance.

Also I would like to get my tower case. The stuff on that hard drive would be hard to replace. (I know I should backup on an external hard drive)

All photos that are worth a damn have been scanned and stored.

So probably wallet, guns, and my new work boots I just got broken in

Like the cat thing, I would drive my vehicles through the wall into the living room. Calling it an attached garage. If I'm starting over, might as well get new rides also.

That almost happened last August. I managed to throw five available guns into the back of the truck. I then realized that I could not get anymore due to fleeing the fire and figuring out how to secure them wherever I would end up. The only consolation was I felt an easing in my worried mind. If the damned house burned down I would be free to go. Free at last from California and this stupid lifestyle.

Well the first was floyd and it had never flooded there, the second was rental/vacation property near Fairfield Fairfield NC. the third was at another spot that had never flooded and I got 18 inches in the shop and a full basement. just a laugh a minute huh!!

About the same situation about 20+ years ago- we had a nasty earthquake up here and I woke up to the house moving all over the place. We sleep on the second floor so I jumped up in my tidy whities and ran down the hall yelling to get out of the house to my kids... I was in a panic and they were sound asleep so the scene probably seemed pretty hysterical afterwards. But the first thing that came to my adrenaline flooded brain was to save the family and the hell with everything else.... by time everyone woke up enough to understand what was going on it was over and the adrenaline rush subsided.... still have some cracks in the sheetrock I purposely left there to remind me of that night ....

Pretty much crystallizes what is important to you and what isn't in a short moment....

We are grateful to never have been through such an event. Except for the occasional visits by our kids and family in general, there are only two of us and no pets here. Our home is very nice and full of meaningful things, but once my sweetheart is out and safe I would only go back in to save some vintage audio equipment and favorite recordings, and some important books. All the other stuff of value is elsewhere and fairly secure. I understand, and echo, your above thoughts about what is most important.

Good topic. Once the people and pets were out, photos and papers/files pertaining to financials would be next. All else seems relatively unimportant.

Friends of ours are sorting through their parents’ large and cluttered estate. House and several barns full. I have jokingly told them that if I am old and live alone, I’ll carry a zippo in my pocket. With my last dying gasp, I’ll flick the lighter and burn the place down. That way the kids can just hire an excavator for a one day cleanup and get on with their lives. We’re half heartedly trying now to downsize. Really should get more serious about it.
