New style. A bit tricky to set, the neighbor that was nice enough to get me these broke his in the process. But, once a runway is found it appears to do the job:

the yellow section is hidden when set, so I hoped it hadn't just tripped when I went out this morning

Nope, not a false hit. And Breeze thought the catch would make a lovely morning snack:

The damn things get a pass if they stay out of the fenced yard. But they ain't so smart. Can't risk having a dog catch a leg in hole when it's going 20 mph.

Gopher hawk. I bought one. Works really well. Told my neighbor about it and he bought three. Sometimes a little hard to find the tunnels in this sand, though

Mostly clay here, and when they backfill a tunnel it's hard to tell the difference from the native soil too. It's like they pack it hard. Probably to keep me from running the hose down there again.

I just set one this evening. The Gopher Hawk works great as long as you can find the tunnel like mentioned. My second preferred method is the sulphur flakes in the hole then the weed burner torch. Amazing how far you can see sulphur smoke traveling through those tunnels and coming up through the cracks in the ground!

Where do you source your sulfur flakes?

I've used the gopher bombs, same principal. But they didn't work on this one during the spring. I'm guessing he was holed up with passages closed off.

Not many cracks in this clay during the spring, so I didn't have the same pleasure as you in following the smoke.

Traps for us, we don't use anything the dogs might get into. We even have a high cupboard in the kitchen for our chocolate. wink

I use the Victor 0610 little galvanized job

JMHO- I'd advise putting a piece of chain or
cable on any gopher trap, and staking it out
just like a varmint trap unless you want some
other worthless varmint to haul away trap
gopher and all. BTDT

The local redtails do a good job on the gophers
when the crows leave them alone

I've used a lot of gopher traps over the years. The best I've found is the old fashioned box trap.

When I was a kid, my best friend's grandfather made his own trap. It was an old 410 shotgun with both stock and barrel sawed off and rigged on a stand, triggered by a cork on a rod that protruded down the hole. The gopher got face full of #6 from 1 foot away. It was recommended that you keep your dogs and kids well away from it.
