In my area in summer prices range from 3 for $1 to 5 for $1 about every other week. These are medium avocados and the taste is incredible. Giant bowls of guac for a few bucks is unbeatable....

Two for a buck here, right now.
Tomatoes on the vine have been under a buck a pound. Our plants have a long way to go.

Mexican place nearby makes guac to order with fresh onion, tomatoe, lime etc. with a mortar and pestle. So good… quarter corn tortillas and deep fry for their chips and salsa.

They certainly aren't evil things like light beer or light sour cream. Sometimes tomatoes look so nice I wish I did enjoy them.

I worked on the Long Beach dock for a fruit expiditer in 1990. There was a freeze that year that wiped out the CA avocado crop. They were bringing $2 each that year. Calavo was shipping them in from somewhere and they let us have some of the damaged crates. We put up enough guacamole in one gallon freezer bags to last the year.

I rented a room in a house on 20 acres outside Arroyo Grande that had four trees that produced to no end. Killer.

Avocados, yes Guac, yes Raw tomatoes, might as well tie me up and try to force feed me because I still wouldnt eat them.
Cooked, stewed, sauced, and fried green tomatoes I love them. But raw, no effin way.
My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

About $2 each here for singles, or string bag of 5 for $6-7 !
Doesn't stop us from smashing them though.
Probably an average week, in season, we'll go through 2 bags !
Love them, any old how !
Paul.

3 for $5 around here usually. I got a Florida avocado tree in the side yard. They are bigger but not as good as the haas avocados. Big old tree makes a lot of them and the neighbors all help themselves to them. So do the yard crews.

Avocado are like gasoline. I prefer they be cheaper but I’m buying regardless.

Price runs a bit over a dollar each ( Maine).
I like comedian Jim Gaffigan's take on how fast an avacado goes bad.,

A friend that I’ve lost touch with is from Florida. His dads only income is growing organic avocados. Last we talked, his dad was raking in the money.
My big kick lately is to smash a ripe avocado on a piece of toast or two. Cover with a slice of fresh tomato. Sprinkle with Montreal steak seasoning. Quick, simple breakfast.

I’d eat em’ every single day if I could buy em’ for that out here. They’re usually at least a buck a piece out here.

I grew up with a friend who's parents had 12 mature trees on their property, each worth $1k toward the property value.............in the 60's.
We had fights with them, nothing like getting hit with a nice black avocado, especially the stone inside!
I had no real use for them for years, they were like those little button mushrooms. Blah, not much taste, sorta slimy. In other words.......what's the big deal. I'd eat them but, standard issue on a carne asada burrito in my area of SoCal was carne, pico salsa, and guac. I always told them to leave off the guac and they would always look at me funny. I'm still mostly that way.
In the 90's, while a starving student, I stopped on the way back to school after Christmas vacation at my uncles place, where he had a commercial avocado orchard above Lawrence Welk's golf course. As I was getting ready to leave he said " come out to the garage, I've got something for you" and he hands me a lug of avocados. I learned to like them............especially when they're ...................free!
Friends I knew used to steal grocery sacks of them when we were kids, and sell them on the streetcorner for $10 so they could get smokes and stuff.
I guess when one lives around them, they're not as big a deal.
