I’ve shot a 264 win mag all my life. I’ve always shot 130 or 140 grain bullets but have been extremely disappointed over the last five or so years about performance; corelokts basically become a piece of flat sheet metal lodged on the offside shoulder and with Accubonds I end up with nothing but the nub of the base that is no larger that a pencil eraser (at least on direct shoulder shots, the rib shots do exit).

I know I could shoot some heavy partitions and get exits; however I’ve noticed a lot of talk on this forum about instantaneous kills with super fast velocity such as can be produced by the 264, 257 Weatherby and a lot of other calibers if light for caliber bullets are used.

I’m thinking about trying some 100 grain Barnes or partitions at very high speed. I’m not sure the 100 ballistic tip would hold up so I probably won’t try them.

For those of our who have shot game at high speed versus regular deer rifle velocity did you notice much difference, and if so, what Bullet’s did you like best?

Thanks!

I’d try the 100 or 120 bt’s, maybe the lighter scenars and let er chew. I run 80 bt’s in my 6ai at 3650. Killed some big Alberta, Montana, and Idaho bucks and grocery shopping cow elk with it

I don't know about the lightweights in the .264, but did shoot a 140g Hornady Interlock into a railroad tie MV 3150 fps. It mushroomed to the interlock and stopped there. Lead was intact at the front. I would consider that great performance. I have had several one shot kills as long as the bullet was put in the right place.

Does that mean big entry and exit holes?

I used to use 100gr Ballistic Tips at 3700 for antelope. Does a lot of meat damage, huge holes. Also shot one in the neck and her head popped off

So, you are unhappy with the performance of bullets that you have recovered from animals that they killed?

I guess I’m lucky and was taught that “terminal performance” is the first thing to consider when choosing a round -

The first step is what is the velocity you are going to hit your target at … which is based on the normal range you are engaging the target at.

This is also why I LOVE the 358 winchester … cheap bullets at 1800-2400 fps mostly hitting at 22oo fps…. And I can right up to the bullet hole.

Yup. TTSX's will solve the high impact velocity issue

Have you tried the 140 Partition?

If you want a little more zip try a 125 Partition.

Even more juice, go with a 100 grain Barnes.

Myself I would try a 140 Partition if you like 140s.

I wondered the same thing..

I use 140s at a bit under 3K fps and have had only one deer travel about 100 yards before dropping.. And that animal was found to have the bottom half of its heart gone from the bullet - and NO idea how that animal kept going with its heart basically gone.. The rest were 'bang/flop'...to date..

I load for accuracy - not for 'speed' records.. YMMV

The only bullet I trusted in my 264 was 140 grain partitions

Can't report on lightweights but there are five of us who shoot the 257 Weatherby with 115 Bergers. All of us have been very happy with the results.

Longer barrels and mostly RL-25. Bullets chronograph from 3600 to 3700 fps. We have killed quite a few animals, mostly coues wt. Shots are at least 200 yds out to around 600 yds which may help mitigate the results. Most bullets have exited with spectacular kills. Exits holes were around 1" to 1 1/2" diameter.

I remember one particular shot that was at 525 yds on a coues. Entered behind shoulder and exited through the opposite side shoulder knuckle with only a 1 1/2" exit hole. He staggered around for a bit then dropped dead.

One of the most spectacular kills was my friend using my 257 on a coues at 400 yds. I was watching through my 15X swaros. It was a perfect broadside shot behind the shoulders. I saw a huge splash of blood that came towards us upon impact. Deer dropped and never even twitched.

33 coues wt
7 elk (6 cows and one huge bull)
4 mule deer
2 antelope (hard to draw)
2 javelina

Unless they have quit making them, and I have a bunch of them....

Nosler DOES make a 100 grain Partition in 6.5 mm...

and they also make a 105 gr SMP partition for a private label European manufacturer, that will show up here and there as a Factory Second or Blemished bullet....

dropped a few blacktails with them, and it didn't leave the blood shot meat a high speed ( 3350 fps MV) Ballistic Tip did, which essentially wasted the off side shoulder....
