My wife is looking for a P&S camera that's a lot better than her smartphone. She doesn't want a bulky DSLR. Something that fits in a pocket. I've looked at the Canon SX740, Sony DSC-RX100 and Nikon A1000. Does anyone have any experience with any of these three or anything else/better.

I bought an rx 100 from Doug a few years ago. It takes amazing pictures. And … it never gets used.
Not sure what smartphone she has, but the newest generation of iPhones take such good pictures that carrying another gadget just does not happen.

Have the Canon SX 740 HS and a Nikon Coolpix. The Canon takes better pictures. Had another Canon 710, I think was the model, wife saw how good the pictures it took and took it and gave me the Nikon Coolpix. Unfortunately the wife drop the 710 about three decks down on a cruise and now have the SX 740 HS.

I also have an Olympus TG-5 that I take on cruises and my backpack when hunting. It takes good pictures.

The latest cell phones make great phone calls. That's where it ends. Once you get larger then 5x7 it's all down hill. The sensor is way to small to preform like a real camera at larger sizes.

The RX100 series are excellent. Canon has a few cameras in that class and Leica has a couple of excellent options as well. All can fit in a jacket pocket. The Olympus TG6 is awesome and can be dropped and drowned. Give me a call at 516-217-1000 to discuss. Mention 24hour when you call

Have the the Sony Rx100vii, bought from Camerland....doubt it would disappoint....

Timely topic, as I am on the hunt too. I forget what model it is, but I have a 12MP Canon super zoom compact pint and shoot that runs off aa batteries. It is over 10 years old. It takes incredible photos. I have some blown up and made into canvas. I scratched the lens on it though, and it now sits at my camp. I thought I upgraded when I bought its successor in an SX620HS. It is a horrible camera. I'll allow that it could be me, but I cannot get it to take a decent picture. With the old one, I could put it on auto, zoom in and have a print quality pic. Not so with the new one. When I view them on the computer, there is no sharpness and when I zoom in, they are pixelated.

I don't mind spending more money on a new camera, but I don't want to do so and get one like this last one. This is a good as the sx620 can do. This distance and these colors should absolutely pop.



Here's another disappointment. The way these animals are staged would have made for a great photo, if the camera did its job.

I asked the same question before going on an Alaskan cruise in 2019 and got some great advice and bought a Sony HX99. It is just under $500 and takes great pictures
