...at the range. Not amplified.

Years ago, before I joined the service, everyone called hearing protection "ear muffs", like the thing you wear in the winter to keep your ears warm.

In the Cdn service, we called them ear defenders. I still use this term.

It might be regional, or military, but what do you call those protective ear thingies where you are?

Still call them ear muffs mostly. Dad bought me my first pair when I was 13, and starting to summerfallow. Naturally used them for shooting too, though not always with .22 rifle, though I do now. Wore them around any loud machinery...augers, lawn mower, you name it. I can still hear well at 61, so appeciate that present from 1973.

Ears.

As in "Got yer ears on?" or just a loud "EARS" to warn others under the roof .

One of the silliest things I heard was when civilian ROs up here started saying, "Eyes and Ears!" Before that, it was, "Shooters ready?"

'Shooters ready?' used to mean 'Shooters ready?', but it hasn't for years now.

Eyes and ears!
Shoes!
Underwear!

Hand up on 5!

No underwear here!
Cease fire!

Usually “plugs”. Sometimes “muffs”. Sometimes “doubled up”.

Personally, I like the cheap, disposable foam ones. They sell them at the safety supply store dirt cheap. I think you get 200 in a bag.

The plugs I use are rated at 32 or 33 db, better than any muffs I’ve seen. Cheap and disposable. I have some e-type muffs that I wear when pistol shooting, or on top of the plugs when someone breaks out a braked AR or some such blaster, like the callow yute that showed up the other day with one of those .50 Beowulfs. What a cannon! He was getting 3” groups at 50 yards, and I was getting pounded by the earth-shattering kaboom.

Ear muffs

Radio on in the 3M WorkTunes ear muffs when I’m mowing or weed eating

Decibullz when I’m shooting. Easier to get behind a scope with them.

This is a fact plugs will do a better job and if you put a set of muffs on over the top of them so much the better
