I have always wondered if Harper Lee read The Old Man and the Boy.

Young Ruark kills the mockingbird that Miss Lottie enjoyed hearing. The Old Man fries his ass and breaks his air rifle to impress upon him the ugliness of killing an innocent thing for no reason.

I’ve been chased many times by mockingbirds when I got too close to a chick that had fallen from the nest. I never shot one ‘cause it’s the state bird and I figured sure as shootin’ a cop would catch me. 😮

I respect their chutzpah. Watching one run off an adult Red-tail is a lesson, And crows. They are territorial and I really enjoy their music. There’s one nesting just outside my front door in Live Oak tree. Cold or hot she sings every morning.

It's fun to watch crows put a whoopin' on a bald eagle. More often than not, you see a bald eagle out here, there's a pack of crows in hot pursuit. That sure was not the case with crows and Golden Eagles up in the high country. Crows could not handle them. The Goldens tended to hunt in pairs, but not always close together. If several crows were up and moving, one Golden would fly in and get their interest - the crows might mess with one - but once they were concentrated a bit, the other Golden would come in hard and take at least one, maybe two, crows out of the air - and the first Golden would get at least one as well. Then, they would land and have dinner. Something interesting to see.

For years, there used to be a Mockingbird that would sit on the neighbor's TV antenna and sing in the half-hour before my alarm would go off for school. I used to lie in bed plotting its demise. I got the bright idea of asking for a pellet gun from my folks, but then let on what I wanted to do with it.
Finally, I get into high school and they make me read To Kill a Mockingbird. I thought I was going to get some tips. What a big disappointment!
I still hate mockingbirds.

Lots of Mockingbirds hang around here. They have a ready food source with all the chili tepins I have growing here. They are candy to mockingbirds !!!
