Ordered two impellers for two small Yamaha outboards I have .

Browsed other parts , an Engine Block - bare block - no crank/rods/pistons/head - didn't even appear to have seals cost $80 less than the entire engine cost when new . $860 for the bare block ,, paid around $980 for the complete outboard . It's a little 2.5hp 4-stroke I used for hunting the swamps of Florida & S. Alabama .
Pondered what the price would come to if everything bought from the parts department 5-6 thousand bucks ? Get a dealership to put it all together 10 thousand bucks ? smile

Stuff expensive these days - looked into building my old truck - white Ford F-150 lariat 5.4 short-box step-side , block machine work $1500-2000 , steel performance crank $800 , bearings? , rods/pistons $1500 , head work $1500 , Perf. ECM/tune$800 , balance ? , gaskets $350 , cams [2] $800 , cam chains/guides? , hordes more odds & ends around $10,000 .
Plus a Procharger supercharger helical cut gears $7500 , exhaust , intake , fuel pumps , performance injectors . Plus all the shipping costs - knocking $20K , plus a lot of work .
Over .

The price on outboards is waaay up right now, that’s if you can even find what you want. Parts aren’t surly non existent too. We ended up buying another 90/60 because the parts I needed to fix mine were on back order for ~ 8 months and summer was coming. The past few years, If you want to be ready, you needed to buy in the off season. Buy your snow machine in the summer, boats and fishing gear are winter purchases.

I heard new outboards are nowhere to be found...I wanted a Yamaha f70 big tiller last November. There was one available, but from Mass. to Fl. the guy wanted 1800 shipping. I went with used 2-stroke instead. Now I hear they are a year backordered...no wait...all orders cancelled!

Big Yamahas are impossible to get right now.

Mike, it's far cheaper to just buy a new outboard, than any major rebuild. A careful internet search will yield some places with a small inventory.

You might have settle for a different name on the cowl than you are used to. But most of the small outboards are made by Tohatsu anyway, plus Honda and Suzuki still build their own. AFAIK.

Automotive engines? It is real tough to beat a Detroit crate motor. Unless one is looking for serious performance upgrades.

I am far more familiar with GMC V8 engines than the alternatives. But am amazed that one can buy a stock 5.7 Chevy for around $2k, or bump the HP by almost 100hp in a GM factory built engine for about $5.5K

I was about ready to pull the plug on an HT383E for my 96 Vortec 4x4. 323 HP for $5400, and bolts right in under my manifolds. But I stumbled across this 01 GMC W/ 130,000 on the meter for less.

It always has been: "How fast can you afford to go?"

Idaho Shooter ,

Howdy .
My two small yamaha's run fine just changed the impellers because they're several years old . Was just killing time when I noticed the parts prices .

Just looked up Toyota 2JZ engines thinking an engine swap into a 20 year old 2wd Tacoma might be fun - 10K-12K for a junkyard 2JZ Supra motor . They're very popular performance engines - too popular for me .
An LS Chevy 5.3 build has to be the best deal for a big HP build .

To this as well as to a bazillion other things today, I can truthfully say:

This never happened under Trump.

Bud ordered 100 new Tohatsu 50,s early last year got 3! No outboards are availble. Bought a 2018 5hp Merc on Craigslist cheap last Sunday 10 minutes after it was listed.

We ran ads looking for 2 stroke LW 35 to 50 hp jet outboards 2 years ago on Craigslist in AK and PNW came up with zip. Since Covid any used stuff if available is sky hi.

If a carb cleaning is all it takes, why not do it yourself? Anything that runs always brings more money.

Thanks EdM !!!

I saw these a few months ago - got wrapped up with trying to move the last few months and didn't save this to my favs .

Bought a detailed performance rebuild book for the 4.6 & 5.4 coming in the mail soon .

https://www.diyford.com/how-to-assembly-ford-4-6l-5-4l-engines-step-by-step/

Not looking for anything extreme 600-700 wheel HP max with controller for low/mid/high settings .

The numbers I quoted were from racing engine companies who build everything as perfect as possible . Some roadracing engines the live from 5000 to 8000+ RPM - no need for that .

If it is of recent manufacture, it is actually built in Japan and is a rebadged Tohatsu. I do not think this is true of the old two strokes.

Thirty HP and under, Mercury and Yamaha are built by Tohatsu. It appears that Tohatsu actually offers a better warranty than does Merc or Yammie on the same engine.

Kind of like buying a Ford Courier pickup built by Mazda, or the Dodge D 50 built by Mitsubishi.

When you type "impeller", do you mean "propeller", or are you running a little jet?

Probably referring to the rubber water pump impellers
that need replacing with time.

Brace yourself, inflation is just warming up, and the Dems are chomping at the bit to print and spend more, plus roll back the Trump tax cuts in an attempt to pay for some of it.
