Have not been there since 2017.If they finished paving the road over Cottonwood Pass it's probably crowded with the city folks from Denver area and the Springs.

Live close by and everywhere is crowded, everywhere. After the covid year of 2020 it is time to get out and vacation. Our small town is overwhelmed and not a packing place or sitting place in a restaurant to be found. And a left turn from a side road is nearly impossible. It isn't going to get any better, so might as well join in.

I could never handle tourist season in the summers and when we weren't playing in a softball tournament I would spend most of my weekends up near timberline far from the madding crowd. Now, that seems it would be impossible to escape the crowds!

Yes timberline WAS the last retreat for locals but no more. Climbing the 14ers was a solo event 20 years ago. Now on any given day the parking lots to the trailheads of most of the 14ers is full and the overflow parking lots are full and random parking is scattered around the lots. Us locals crawl in a hole from Friday thru Sunday.

Fortunately there are a schit ton of mountains in Colorado that aren’t 14’ers; and they’re not crowded at all. But they have everything to offer that the 14’ers do...except 14,000 vertical feet of altitude. There are well over 600 peaks in Colorado that are between 13,000 and 13,999 feet. And there are well over 700 peaks in Colorado that are between 12,000 and 12,999 feet. That alone is a lotta trekkin’ and climbin’...!

I hung out a bit lower, Parkview , Sheep mountain in the Troublesome, Bowen and Baker mountain in the never summers. Usually the camps we frequented were rather peaceful. I was on a SAR team back then so oft times my respite was short lived!
