Ahhh, I think the article's photo caption is a little misleading. Rather it should say something like "The Ruger No. 1 has a high stock comb that allows keeping the head erect while shooting iron sights offhand.

If you have a face as wide as mine, the Ruger high stock pretty much prevents the use of the iron sights. It is copied from the American style scoped bolt action rifle.. If I ever buy another No. 1 (not likely), it will go to a stocker for a European style "hogback" stock.

when anyone talks Ruger #1 i always listen or read the article its always enjoyable ,i always hunt deer and antelope with a Ruger #1 great - safe rifle to hunt with. there is an advantage to a Ruger # 1 too these fine rifles don`t have a receiver so if your in a box blind #1 move easier to move around not as long a rifle out the window. did anyone know Federal Cartridge uses some Ruger #1 actions for pressure testing because the Ruger #1 action is very strong ? > thanks for posting this article,Pete53

I always wanted a No. 1, but for years, the stars just didn't align right. I even tried to order a new one at one time in the mid-80's, but my lgs guy checked with several distributers and told me that there were none available in any of the several calibers I was okay with. Finally, about 12 or 15 years ago, I got a call one night, guy I knew had one his son was selling. It was a 1-B in like-new condition. It came with an SKB case and a 3.5-10 Nikon Monarch scope for $800. It was a .308, which would probably be the last caliber I'd choose for a No. 1, but... The Nikon was immediately replaced by a VXIII 1.5 - 5 which was a much better set up for my purposes, also visually more to my taste. I had to do a little strategic pressure relief and something else (can't remember what, now) per advice received here and soon it was shooting around an inch with good loads. It's among my three or four favorite rifles now.

Much appreciation here for the Number One. I've owned several but am down to just two, a 375 H&H and a 7mm Remington Magnum. I've hunted with both rifles, taking black bears with the 375, mule deer & antelope with the 7mm.

Have to admit that I'm quite pleased with the accuracy, both of mine shoot quite well.

I've been shooting #1's off and on for 40 years now, currently a 6.5x55 and a .250 Savage, and I have never owned one that didn't return stellar accuracy.

My 450/400 NE 3" has the same wood grain as your H&H, Cascade. When I got around to scoping it with a 1.5-4x20mm in low Ruger rings the only way I could insure a solid cheek weld and have the reticle dead-on when opening my eye was to add a thick leather cheek pad.

I was sorely tempted to add another to the accumulation lately...it was either a 9.3 X 74 R or a 9.3 X 62, I don't remember. It had a (to me) appropriate looking scope and included around 4 boxes of factory ammo....I'm almost thinking dies as well, but not sure. It was like new. One box of ammo was a partial, and the guy at the lgs said he thought that was all the guy shot through it before deciding it was just more fun than he wanted to have. I think it was $1700. Now this thread has me thinking I might go back and see if it's still there.

I had two in 22ppc, and a 223. All were the heavy barrel varmints. Also a 1B in 22h. None were worth a damn accuracy wise, even after some custom triggers and all kind of forend fix schemes. Swore I’d never buy another. But I did, a red pad 218 B in #1B. Had the heavy trigger replaced with a Jard, and it’s a 1” gun.

Always wanted one. Never got one.

Closest I came was one that was fancy gold inlaid, serialized 1 of 10 made for Marble Arms. Given away as part of their class prizes at their sporting clays tournament when Mike Stewart was running Marbles.

Damned Lewis class - had I missed one more bird, I would gave been top of C class instead of bottom of B and gotten the Ruger.

Prob never shoot it tho, I should look for one now. Are there any sites that specialize in selling them or is it all hunt and peck across the webs?

I wanted one for a long time, but wanted the right chambering. Finally found it when I came across this one In 300h&h.

Mine shoots very well with IMR4831 and 180g Interlocks. I have not yet gotten the chance to hunt anything with it, but I'm hoping to change that this fall.

I have that article somewhere, maybe in the special Single Shot edition they put out some years ago, a good one to pick up BTW. There are some real beauties in it, some I’d never seen before.

They’re a good rifle. I’ve had the 1A in 30-06, 270, and 7x57 and should have kept them all. New paint fever got the best of me. Pretty dumb. I’m now reduced to a B78 in 25-06 in the single shot category. Obviously they’re quite different but there is still plenty of room in my little collection for another 1A (or two).

My first #1 was the AB in 7x57 with a great piece of wood but that was 40 or so years ago and I still miss that rifle. Current #1's are 22 Hornet. This has exceptional wood for a #1 and a case colored receiver, 250 Savage, 405 Win, 450/400 NE, 375 H&H, 35 Whelan. I've used the action on two custom builds a 7MM/08 and a 300 H&H. One is currently in the works which will be with a half round hale octagon barrel in 300 Savage .

Slayed a fair number of chucks w it

Got an RSI in same and shot one deer, plain wood but too nice for a hunting gun ( looked too new ).

Got a 4 digit in .280 rem, not mint. Hunted a few times, still too nice for my being a klutz afield.

Ended up w a beat to hell B in .22-250. Was my dads.
And a #3, which now wears #1 wood. That one is .219 DW.

I thought maybe a custom in .35 rem. Stainless w synth.
But have a cheap Rem 760 that kills deer dead.

I bought a used number 1 with nice wood chambered 7x57mm shortly after I turned 18. I took it on a couple of backpack hunting trips to North Manitou Island before selling it to my brother. I regretted it and bought another one with plain wood. Somewhere down the line I’d like to add one more chambered in 300 H&H.
