Message to the experts. I’ve watched rifle prices skyrocketing in the last couple of years like the rest of you. I’ve come across a very nice 1949 336 waffle top in unaltered condition. It has the 24 in. Barrel and rates about 90% overall condition. I’ve wanted one like this for quite awhile but the guy wants 1400.00 for it. Twice what I’ve seen them sell for a couple years back. What do you think? Thanks

I know prices have gone up, but that is crazy. I'm assuming it is a 30-30 as well.

I just got one a couple weeks ago for $450 to the LGS, 30-30.
It is likely closer to 80-85% condition but is unaltered. It shoots
just fine!!

Yeah, this rifle is is definitely overpriced. But I’ve kinda become obsessed with it. Dangerous I know. Guess I’ll just offer a reasonable price and see where it goes from there. If any one here has one they might part with send me a message. Thanks guys.

That rifle as you describe it is a second year production rifle. They are spendy in 32 special for sure. I have seen them sell for a thousand dollars fairly regularly in the condition you describe. I recently attended a small town auction that had a large Marlin collection. Some of the prices they brought were amazing. I sent you a private message.

Hurry on down to the classifieds right now. There is something there you might be interested in from a long time forum member. Looks nice.

Aww poop. Well they are out there. What you describe is a bit high but if you like it and would like to own it then.........there you go. I am an old fart so it is easy now but if I liked it and wanted it I didn't fuss about what people thought about the value. You have to decide. Wave a thousand dollar bill under the sellers nose and see what happens. Or start with an $800 dollar bill. If it is as nice as you say then $800 not out of the question for a .32 special. 336A in 32 Special is kind of like a nice set of chicken lips. Hard to find. If you would want to talk about that rifle in .35 Remington, let me know. I am not sure what I am doing yet.

Rj3081,

If you really want it and can afford it go for it…..FWIW when I get in your position I weigh the scarcity and how bad I want it. If I think I will eventually find another I wait and it usually pays off in getting what I want at a price a little more “reasonable”. If it’s unlikely that I’ll find one in the future I buy it - this also typically turns out good as well because if you keep it and take care of it the price typically catches up to what you payed for it.

Good luck they are nice rifles!

Look at Guns International. You might see what you like for 1/2 that price.

FWIW, I recently picked up an unmolested 1950 336A 24" in 35 Rem. (85% metal/ 95% wood) for $425, which included a $50 box of Hornady ammo.
However, In March I also picked up a minty 1953 336 in 32 WS for $550.

Does the bore look as nice as the outside with no rust or pitting?

Update.. I bought the rifle after a little negotiation. I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere so I’m not able to scour the LGS and pawn shops looking for that sweet deal. Having said that, I am very glad I bought it. It is in remarkable condition and I picked up a little ammo from a fellow campfire member. Can’t wait to shoot it and possibly carry it hunting whitetail in the Black Hills this fall!🦌
