What is the deal with the 30-03 chambering? Make many of them??

Could have bought it. But bought a Savage 99 instead. The 30-03 just uses/shoots heavier bullets than the 30-06 right?

I know where it is at if someone wants it. $1400.

I guarantee it is a poorly struck 6. I have seen a few of these through the years. They really look like a 3, but if you pull it out of the stock it will be 1906 and a two digit year. Bank on it.

According to Some very well versed Winchester Experts, on the WACA, gun site Forum, there are no Documented Winchester pre-64 30-03 Caliber, Model 70's mfg. by Winchester!

A few years back, Someone had a Winchester, with a Chipped Stamped, roll Die, 30-06 Caliber, that to the naked Eye, looked like a 30-03 Caliber, but with proper magnification, from, Justin Hale, (@pre64win.com), it was verified to be a bad stamp, which happened from time to time, on different arms, of the past.

It also didn't make sense that the 30-03 cartridge, had a longer neck, on it than the comparable 30-06 cartridge, and wouldn't chamber in the 30-06, but the 30-06 cartridge would chamber in the 30-03!

Also the U.S. fought the World War, with the 30-06, right up until the mfg. of the Winchester Model 70.

So NO, WINCHESTER DID NOT MFG. A PRE-64 MODEL 70 IN 30-03 CALIBER!
At least there are no Documentations, as records for this Model are non exist-ant.(unlike older Winchesters)

If you see one, it could be an honest mistake by anyone looking at it with the naked eye, and not an honest miss representation! (maybe)

pic. Showing, what appears to be a 3, but when you zoom in on the 03, you can compare and see that it's really a bad stamp, or chipped stamp, and not really a 3!
Comparing the 3's are when you can really see the difference!
Here's the Problem.
The U.S. Government, contracted the Caliber 30-06, hence the 30 GOVT'06!
The U.S. Government never contracted the 30-03 as a Government round/Caliber, and there never was a stamp indicating it to be a 30-GOVT'03! Caliber!
However the U.S. Did use the 30-03 in the Springfield Rifle, and Replaced the 30-40 Krag Jorgenson Rifle, But there never was a 30GOVT'03 Stamp!
Even on the Springfield Rifle it was stamped plainly 30-03!

I had an 1895 that was chambered in 30-03
I can’t recall for sure what the marking looked like but that one sure looks familiar.
Makes no sense to do a mod 70 in that chambering
A fake maybe the 3 looks funny and nothing like a 6

The pic screams fake to the experienced eye, even 1895's chambered for .30-03 are seldom encountered. This is the first I've ever heard of a M/70 in that chambering, by 1936 the .30-03 was as dead as a dodo bird.

That is not a fake. That is a poorly struck 6 that looks like a 3. I have owned a few of them through the years and saw a few more. The under barrel marking is 1906, a triangle, and a 2 digit date.

That’s the result of a chipped die stamp.
Posted some pics (not mine) of some other examples in the Image Gallery.

If it's being represented as an original what do you call it if not a fake ? Surprised something like that made it past Winchester quality inspectors.

I whole Heartedly Agree!

When the Pic is blown up and focused closer, it's amazing how evident it becomes!

The numerals, aren't even closely matched, between a 3, and a 6!

It could very well just be something that someone found, and said, "Hey!, What's This"?

Am I explaining myself properly?

The owner, just might not be sure!!!

The OP saw the gun in question in a shop and asked here what the deal was with that chambering and if they made many. It was for sale for $1400. Clearly it wasn’t being represented as a super rare model 70.
I often wonder if people read more than a post or two back in these threads.
