I’ve wanted to add a pre 64 Model 70 to my safe for a while. I want a nice shooter grade model with original finish, without extra holes and preferably built before the 60’s. Most likely a standard model over a featherweight and most likely a common caliber probably .270 Win or 30-06.

A rifle for sale on GB that caught my eye is an all original Model 70 made in 1953 30-06 with good blueing and wood with the original matching serial number box. The seller is asking $2350 shipped. That seems high to me but where I’m having trouble deciding is I’m ballpark familiar with prices but have not been around Winchester collecting enough to know how much value the box brings for that age, model and condition rifle. Looking for thoughts and opinions from some of you knowledge Winchester guys.

Thats way too much for a std wt 30-06 made in 1953. The original box adds value, but not $1,350.00 worth.

I’m not an expert by any stretch but I’d think if you look over classifieds and keep your eye on gunbroker along with gun stores you should be able to find that rifle for 1200-1300 or less. I know it’s crazy right now with gun prices but that is a mint for a plain old Sporter in 270/30-06.

Good luck with your search.

Spot on. I saw a primo 1958 243 fwt the other day for $1,000.00. Shop may have gone down on the price. The guy still has some really cool olympic sights for my model 52 as well. In a 270 or 30-06 hunting rifle, i'd be looking for a fwt myself. There's no downfall to hunting with a fwt. IMHO

Thanks guys, that confirms what I suspected. Obviously the box adds value but I wasn’t sure if I was missing something else or if prices had skyrocketed. Pretty cool having the original but it isn’t worth doubling the value of the rifle to me.

An honest M70 with condition. The box is probably worth $400.00 - $500.00.

If you’re patient they pop up pretty often. Especially in 270 and 06. Wish you luck in the search. That’s the fun part sometimes.

If I were to do a lot of hunting with it I’d go with a fwt and won’t rule one out if I see the right one at the right price. Growing up I heard and read about the the pre 64 70’s and always wanted one. I won’t hunt a lot with it and like the idea of the steel floor and butt plate just because I guess.

I want a rifle in original and 90% or better condition without spending a heap of cash so I’ve narrowed it down to common cartridges and sporter or fwt.

I would guess you could pick up a nice enough hunting, shooter grade in 30-06 for 800 or less is you are patient and diligent.

I would encourage you to spend time looking before you pull the trigger on one so to speak. I've bought and sold more than a few of these things, and continually have to keep up on the market. its dynamic in my view.
