Picking up one tomorrow with a broken buttstock. I believe it is a G because it is checkered. Are these specific to a takedown, or will a regular buttstock fit? Does anybody have one they would get rid of? Thanks!

I have asked the same ?, seems that they were fitted to the particular pc, however I did find a buttstock that fit one of my 22hp, never say never

The buttstocks aren't specific to a takedown, no. But, as texken says, each stock is handfitted to the receiver. Whether any other specific stock will fit really well on your receiver isn't necessarily likely. You might get lucky, and you'll probably get one good enough to shoot.
Repairing the stock is usually the best option if it's at all possible. How bad is your buttstock?

The G it seems to me has longer sharper points on the checkering pattern where they point towards the receiver. A deeper "V" if you will.

And it doesn't have a crescent buttplate like the 99A and 99B.... or as high of a comb as the 99R/99RS...
But the receivers specs are the same, so a buttstock from any model will fit the 99G just as well as a random 99G buttstock.
And those checkering points vary a LOT. We couldn't find a consistent pattern, though some of the early stocks do tend to have higher points than later stocks.

I would think an EG butt stock would be a good substitute. But nothing of quality is easy to find anymore!

Prewar Rs seem to have longer lengths of pull and, possibly, checkering specific to the model.

The previous owner tried to glue it together, and made a mess of it. I will try to dissolve the glue and start over, but would prefer another stock and modify to fit. If there are any out there, drop me a line!

I got lucky a few months ago and found a 1916 250 stock set that fit my 1915 action and barrel very very nice. The barrel channel was snug and a little sand paper on an Oak block took what looked like a hundred years of crud off, and it fit perfect. It took so little off, it didn't change the color of the wood at all. A wee bit on both sides of the tang. Some times all the planet line up and every thing works. Good luck.

JoeMartin, I am just hoping for something acceptable for a shooter. I may try to dissolve the glue on the original stock and regulus it correctly, as it is the original stock for the rifle.

There are a couple guys here that have taken rifles snapped off at the wrist and put them back together so they have to point to the crack with a sharp pencil to see it. They say most can be fixed.

This stock was butchered from the previous owner. I would take the gamble on a used one if I could find one.

I have a couple that needs work but are structurally sound and the checkering intact. No cracks at the wrist or receiver area. PM your email and I'll shoot you some pics.

This is a Savage 99 pattern stock and it appears to be an aftermarket one.

I agree. It would work on an early non-checkered EG. Or you could have it checkered and use it on an the later EG, T, F, E etc..
