My brother has this rifle and no longer has any use for it. Too much recoil! Can the barrel be removed and the action be chambered for another caliber? I’ve heard of actions being increased in size but didn’t know if it could be reduced to something like a 270 or 30-06. Or any other suggested calibers. He hunted in the west earlier in his life but now due to health issues he’ll probably only be hunting near home for whitetails.
Thanks for any information.

Much easier to make an action take a larger cartridge than a smaller one. The best option would be to trade for a smaller caliber rifle, Mk V’s were available in standard calibers. Another option would be to reload for it, easy to produce lighter loads with less recoil.

I believe you could rebarrel that to a 257 weatherby. Lot less recoil and a laser trajectory.

I just bought one and my first project is working up a load in the 300 H&H range with 168-180 gr bullets.

Agree. I’d stay with 3.6” mag length cases. The 257 Wby is shorter, though it may feed OK.

One can load the 300 Wby to about any power level desired. Full house loads aren’t needed for everything. And they do tend to slap ya.

Load 165gr bullets with 60% of a max load of H4895 or IMR 4895.

Selling the rifle and buying what he wants will be the cheapest and simplest approach. He will take a hit if he trades it to a dealer, but so what. Maybe bring it to the next gun show.

Yep!! Smart move.

If he or you reload it would be better and cheaper to download the 300 Wby ammo to 30/06 velocity. It would reduce the recoil and not devalue the rifle.

If that is not an acceptable option I think it would be better to sell his rifle and buy a different one. Weatherby's are a popular rifle and you should have no problem finding a buyer.

That’s exactly where I started. Now I’m just waiting for a little cooler and a little dryer day to try them.
