How complicated is it to lighten this trigger. Iposted this in gunsmithing and got no response. Would appreciate any help. Thank You.

It is very difficult to do safely. It's a short trip to a slam fire problem.

Your options are to leave it alone or get rid of it.

Lightly lubricate it and get a snap cap that you can use to dry fire it a couple hundred times. Most loosen up with that.

Reo, unless you are a Savage 99 gunsmith specialist, I would be wary of trying to slick up the trigger other than using Calhoun's method which does help.
I bought a used 99C at a gun show for a steal of a price. The guy told me it had a safety issue and when checking the safety would not slide. I scoped it and took it to the range. Thank god I always have my barrel pointed in a safe direction cause when I loaded the round it fired off when the lever closed. This was the biggest gun surprise I have ever had. Scared the crap out of me. Turns out someone, probably the guy I bought it from, tried to do a trigger job and it looked like they used a Dremel Tool to do it with. There is a post here from years back with more information and pics of the offending homemade trigger job.

I might as well go ahead and post this. I got a slightly abused 75th Anniversary recently. I scoped it and took it to the range. The internals look just like the pre-mil 99's. The trigger pull is horrible. I put some gun oil on the appropriate surfaces and it's still horrible. I'm still working on loads for it and will post pics once I get it to shoot decently. Is it safe to work on the pre-mil style trigger?

i have used plumbers silicone grease on the mating surfaces for a slight improvement.

Is it safe to work on the pre-mil style trigger? You can polish the sear and trigger mating surfaces and usually get good results. Just resist the urge to shorten either one. They need that much engagement to safely complete the whole cocking cycle. Have seen that in several guns and nearly had a serious incident with one of them.

The 75th Anniversary is built on a 99E style receiver and parts. So it's safe to do anything to the Anniversary rifle that it's safe to do to a 99E.
