As I run out of small pistol primers, I have another 600 PCs of 357 brass to load.

I have available the following Small Rifle primers from which to try to choose an acceptable substitute.

Winchester WSR
CCI BR4
Remington 7 1/2 BR
Remington 6 1/2
CCI 450 SR Magnum

Has anyone successfully used any of the above in 357 magnum brass with mildish loads??

I would use the 6 1/2 as they are made for light loads. The others might give light strikes.

I have been using SRP in the .30 Sneezer which is a necked down .357 case w/o any issues. The loads are mild, 180 grains of lead running borderline subsonic. T/C Contender.

There were several threads this spring about substituting small rifle primers in handgun loads, including a couple of posts with extensive comparative data. The verdict was that small rifle primers can safely be used in any sane handgun load, with minimal effect on velocity and accuracy.

Use the 6 1/2's and if you run out finish up with the WSR's.

When Midway blew out Rem 6.5s I picked up couple sleeves. Was thinking of using them in 9 for open bolt guns. Began using them in Glocks and Smith revolvers. Now freely substitute 6.5s in 9mm and .38 Spl. Last couple years Rem 6.5s have fired all our pistol class ammo.

Here's the thread from December of 2020.

Testing pistol ammo loaded with small rifle primers

Just this morning I was out shooting up some .38 Special loads with CCI 400 primers.

Thanks Jim,
I thought I remembered seeing this topic covered, but I was unable to locate it.

At that time, I wasn’t running low on pistol primers.
I thought that they would be available by the time I needed more.

What a fool I was.

FYI, from CCI: the CCI 400 SR primers are the same as CCI small pistol magnum primers.

How many of those rounds were fired double action? I've known guys that have fire 10's of thousands of rounds in a double action revolver and never fired a single round double action.

Brian Pearce touched on this subject for use in 38 Super.

His SRP were of heavier construction than his SPP, thus the SRP disguised signs of high pressure. Though they did nothing to eleviate that pressure.

Brian stated that the SRP actually accelerated the burn rate of the powder, and caused pressure to spike higher.

Ray, Have not used CCI 400s, but use Rem 6.5s in .38. Few boxes worth so far. No issues trigger cocking in our Smiths. Load the ammo for pistol classes.

Only exception so far was a Dan Wesson. Hammer spring was weak. Once replaced it set off 6.5s fine in DA.
