Cookie got word of a melanistic fawn about 60 miles south, so 5 days were consumed giving chase. Same area where she caught one last fall, She has amazing patience when it comes to critters, but if I cost her 5 minutes, there's Hell to pay.

First, an image of regular mulie fawns.

The typical pose for the first 4 days, as it had little interest in standing around for a camera shot.

Finally, the morning of day 5, I managed to slowly push the doe, the fawn's normal looking sibling, and the target of interest out of a willow thicket. Seems to have a bit of a brownish cast to its coat, so I don't know if it will shift to black as the season progresses and the fall/winter layer emerges. Not a bit of white to be seen presently, but is a bit scruffy. Despite being small, it can cover serious ground in a hurry.

Did not see many bucks of substance, but ran into a 3 x 2 one morning.

Also, a raccoon dining on the edge of the creek one evening. Zooming in on other similar images, it seemed to be diligently working on what looked to be a muskrat or small beaver skull bearing some rodent type incisors.

Have a good one.

Canon EOS 7D Mark IV and a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Lenses are a Canon 100-400mm and a Canon 500mm prime for the coon and 3x2 buck. One of my greatest mistakes was buying her a good camera 8 or 9 years back. One can easily get into cosigner land now.

That's a pretty rare find (1 in 500,000 ??). A guy who works for me, saw a melanistic white tail a couple of years ago.

Great pictures. Thanks for posting them.

StoneCutter:

For sure rare, but she's run down 4 in the last 8 years. Lots of spontaneous runs throughout the year, and she devotes almost all of November to an extended camping/photo session for deer. That being, she's around serious numbers of critters.

Yes. That locale has it crossing/wading/swimming several irrigation ditches, a marsh, and a couple streams.

That buck looks pretty dark too. Or is it just the lighting?
