With common use of security holsters by police the distance of threat from an edged weapon has been extended to 30'. As for the bystanders it would seem the dumbasses would realize they are downrange and get the hell out of the way. They were told to get out of the way before the shooting started. Everyone of them deserve the Darwin award. It was the last good thing the Perp. did in his live. He stopped all of the slugs from hitting those idiots.

There has NEVER been a 10' rule. It's been a 21' rule for years, and even that distance is being re-thought as the defender may need more time to stop the threat.

He was a lot closer than that wide angle lense made him appear. Indeed the body cam footage with its wide angle lens seems to make it look much further away then the bystander video does. Looks justified to me.

I think that the basic rule for shooting a knife wielding assailant, defendable in court, is 21 feet. Seems plenty close if someone is intent on carving me up! memtb i was having a brain fahrt, thinking 21ft and typed 10 feet.
