Is it possible to get one of these little Leupolds mounted up on a Win70 without using a rail? Worth tracking down one of the 3x scopes instead?

Long action or short action? Yes to both, but the solution will be different.

It's a short scope. You can try Talley lightweight one piece rings/bases and mount them so that the tall sides on both the front and rear are next to the ejection port. Personally, I don't like this "permanent" solution.

A better solution would be to use Talley steel bases. An "extended" front scope base on a short action, and a "double extended" front base on a long action will put the front ring about 1/8" behind the gold ring and give you about perfect eye relief.

The double extended will overhang the ejection port a tad, but it has no effect on ejection or loading the magazine.

I have these bases on my .300WM and the rifle functions perfectly. It allows me to use Talley QD rings. I can swap the 3.5-10 scope that's on it in this picture to a shorter 2.5-8 and still have about the same eye relief.

Use the double extended on the short action and you will have all sorts of room for adjustment.

You can also use Warne bases. On a long action you may have to flip the front base around, again overhanging the ejection port a bit (like on this X-Bolt of mine), but having no effect on ejection. On a short action you might be able to keep the front base from overhanging.

BTW, on the above picture, it looks like the rear ring overhangs the rear of the base. It doesn't. It's flush. It's just the angle of the picture that makes it look that way.

I’d find a 3x, to my eye a M70 doesn’t look good with a short scope that only has one bell.

A fixed 3X is sure nice to mount. That’s for sure.

thanks guys, I'll start looking for a 3x, shame they're discontinued. I don't see any real competition for that scope out there in current production.

If I can't find a 3x I'll try the Talley's or Warne bases with a 2.5.
